Get a shield TV
I have both and it really depends on the use case. Shield tv acts as my plex server and dvr. Can easily add extra storage and Has much more flexibility as a retro gaming device (and really as a gaming device in general). But I hate the trend of the UI being changed for the worse. Apple TV is just a cleaner experience if you want simple.

This is pretty good but keep in mind so-called HFR uptake in the apps has been pretty slow. What this means is HDR at 60 fps which only the new Apple TV does isn't fully supported yet. You can only watch Thursday Night Football and MLB postseason on Fox in SDR right now for example. A bit of a let down considering this is 3x the price of the Firestick 4K Max and 2x the Roku Ultra both of which show UHD sports broadcasts in full HDR at 60 fps. Now Apple just came out with TVOS 15 so maybe this will change soon.

100 Gbps, do you live in a data center?
Wow... I thought my 500 megabits service was fast but I should probably reconsider if Comcast now offers a hundred gigabits.

I am setting up my basement entertainment center. Should I go with chromecast Google tv 4k or this? I don't have any apple preference though. However I have both apple phone and Samsung Note 20.
I tried the Google one and immediately sold it. Wasn't as powerful (felt sluggish) and the coloring/lightning was all off. It was was darker and just didn't look right on my 4k Samsung. Have been happy with the Apple TV 4k for the past few years.

No. It's overpriced. And will continue to be until they add basic features like a USB port or all of the missing audio formats that are the industry standard.
It's not overpriced at all.

First of all you can find the older model 4K for $100 at many retailers for the last few months and i am certain it will be on sale again on Black Friday.

Even if you cant find it, this at $160 pays for itself.

No ads, super quick navigation and scrubbing of videos, clean interface with the ability to close apps like on your phone something none of the streaming devices offers.

The only other comparable device is the Shield and the specific model that competes with the Apple TV 4k in speed costs well over $100.

If you are part of the Apple ecosystem then it's a no brainer to grab this:

- Seemless Airplay (much quicker than any TV with built in Airplay)

- Ability to hook up multiple Homepods /Homepod minis

- The ability to watch TV using your Airpods/Airpods Pro is probably the biggest feature.

Try to hook up bluetooth headphones to the Firestick/Google streaming device - it's lag city - no matter what bluetooth headphones ive tried there is ALWAYS lag at least 1-2 seconds - aka it's unwatchable.

Airpods with the Apple TV syncs flawlessly and with spatial audio it's amazing to watch shows with - until you try it you wont know how good it is.

If you dont have the money to buy it - that is perfectly fine - go buy a $30 Firestick.

But for others here, dont be dissuaded from purchasing THE best streaming device on the market, period.

Sure i can drive a Honda Civic and it would take me to the grocery store without problems, but Id rather drive a Mercedes.

Same applies here

I bought this just last week. So far, I'm very pleased with this. Of course, I had the previous HD Apple TV so I knew the interface and settings. However, I recently upgraded to a 4K TV and an Atmos capable receiver. I have the NVidia Shield Pro as well (2017 model). Unfortunately that model of NVidia Shield does not support Dolby Atmos, which is highly disappointing. Not sure if there were technical reasons or just business reasons (to make people upgrade). I do wish the NVidia Shield would have supported Atmos via a firmware upgrade. And so after installing ceiling speakers, I decided to upgrade to this model of Apple TV to get Dolby Atmos.

The comments about Bluetooth headphone use with Apple TV are spot on. It's way better than any other device. I believe Apple TV delays the video a bit to get around the Bluetooth lag. The end result is lag-free audio. And spatial audio on AirPods Pro is phenomenal. Yes, many other devices allow Bluetooth connectivity but they always have slight lag.

One tip for new owners who might be setting it up with a hub enabled Harmony remote. I found that setting it up with the Harmony remote via regular infra-red doesn't work very well. It used to work perfectly with my previous Apple TV HD, but somehow on the 4K the button inputs were either not registering perfectly or resulted in multiple inputs. Then I read that you can set it up as a Bluetooth remote. Just add it as BT Apple TV instead of Apple TV. That'll allow you to pair it as a bluetooth remote. It works much better that IR, and I haven't had any problems since.
