I'm not going to promote any particular brand, but check out cotton/bamboo mattress covers for waterproof and doesnt make you sweat. And we use one because we had a iced tea spill on our last mattress, and the delivery company refused to haul it off when we bought a new mattress at JC Penney. We told them what it was, and even though they were wearing latex gloves, they took a picture of it and refused and told me I needed to contact JC Penney. I would have steam cleaned the thing if I knew their agreement was that sensitive.

No one ever sells or buys used mattresses and stains don't impact a mattresses performance in any way. It's one of those dumb things, like grandma putting plastic cover on a couch

To some people it matters. I would prefer that the replaceable protector is stained and stinky than my expensive mattress. More power to you for not wanting or needing one.
