I'm sure there are similar iphone apps available as well.
And it's not just ridiculously old classical books, there are many many authors that have voluntarily placed their books into the public domain either in their will or just to try to promote knowledge. You can find books covering everything from gardening and composting, building framing, plumbing, auto mechanics, engineering, advanced mathematics, and tutorials of every imaginable type. And that is just the nonfiction.
I would also recommend checking out your local public library to see if they have an ebook checkout feature. Many / most public libraries should have this option at this point, and many of them have reciprocal shared access with other libraries so you may be able to browse and check out books from several well established collections.
If you have a Kindle reader, you can still email the ebooks to your Kindle email address to read them on your paperwhite, etc.
And there are some libraries that are just open to the public and don't require any kind of membership, http://openlibrary.org/
There's also the ancient and monolithic repository of https://archive.org/ which has over 5 million books available in multiple languages along with other audio books, scanned art and manuscripts, photos of everything from landscapes to statues and architecture. Visit and you'll be absolutely amazed at the breadth of knowledge available at your fingertips. This is library of Alexandria kind of shit people! Absolutely amazing.
