Target has daily deals posted in app that show Pikmin 3 will be $29.99 on 10/17 for only one day. Unsure if this is going to be digital/ physical or both, but not a bad time to pick it up!

Yes it can. Pikmin has about as much story as Mario. So you don’t need to have played any game in the series to play this.

Re: can it be played without knowing anything about it or playing the previous games: absolutely. It does a great job of introducing every play mechanic and gives you enough backstory to act as a good starting point. If you're not sure if you will like it, try the demo - it gives you a good taste of the story and challenge modes. It's a real time strategy game, but feels very unique. As for your playtime / value questions, it'll take a little more than 12 hours to beat the story mode, but that opens a higher difficulty level, side missions, and a challenge mode that sucked me in for another 25-30 hours. To 100% everything it took me about 70 hours, but I really enjoyed the experience. I got it for $40 digitally and it was well worth it, but I also had nostalgia from playing Pikmin 1. Since it's a first party Nintendo game, I wouldn't expect it to get lower than $30 unless Nintendo brings back their value series branding like "players choice".

Absolutely. In fact, going back to the other games is pretty rough. I loved them at the time but this one fixes a lot of small problems you wouldn't notice about the others until they're fixed. This is definitely the best starting point. Aside from a handful of inside jokes you won't miss out.

Target is doing holiday price matching from October 10th to December 24th on any previous purchases between those dates. So go ahead and buy now.
Thou did not get the memo that Black Friday sales are happening all the time due to shipping and logistics issues.
I loved this game but it is very short. $30 isn't bad, I would bite if I didn't already own it.

It has a demo. The kids loved the demo, so I got the game and they haven't finished yet (though they did put it down a while ago).

Wow, great deal if it's for a physical copy! Purchased for this price a while back, but $30 is rare for first party stuff. Would definitely purchase if I didn't already own the game.

Also, if you want to get the 60 gold points for the physical version you need to buy it in the next two weeks, because the game released a year ago. Those are only worth 60 cents, but just saying.

This is my Wife and I's favorite game to play couch co-op with. We beat it on every difficulty and there is extra stories to get platinum trophy's on. If they ever come out with a Pikman 4, I will preorder that right away.

Yep, and the trend has already been underway for a while. I think online competition plus all the negative publicity of stampedes and fights have soured a lot of retailers on the antiquated BF model.

I realize they haven't hit yet, but since like GC days, Nintendo created a special label for select first party games and drops their price. I believe Wii, Wii U, and 3DS were called Nintendo Selects. I think GC was Gamers Club? Something like that. Anyway, pretty sure I bought Pikmin 3 for $20 at regular price shortly before Wii U was killed.

Yah, I have a receipt from March 2016 for Nintendo Selects: Pikmin 3 for $20 + tax.
