I have old Viggle gift cards that will hopefully still work. Does anyone know if I purchase something with the Viggle GC and then return the item, will I get the funds back on a plastic CVS GC or will it be refunded to the paper Viggle GC?

Also, anyone tried entering those Viggle GCs on a SCO?

Just wanted to clarify that some people think that business decisions are all tax driven when they are not. The business (like marketing, advertising, etc...) makes decisions and yes, it does reduce taxable income - but that is because that cash is paid to someone else - who would recognize it as income and pay tax on it. Marketing and advertising do not tax a tax deduction into consideration when designing programs.

What you quoted from me was both a tax and accounting response to someone's suggestion that selling toothpaste for nothing results in a tax deduction. You took it out of context and put forth an incorrect interpretation of the comment.

I simply explained that Colgate was engaging in a marketing practice with these promotions. So, while they do not make any reportable profits on the sale, they do incur both manufacturing and marketing costs that will be deducted from the profits they make on other sales. That reduces their overall profit or reportable tax income. That is how this works. I have no idea what behind the scenes accounting goes on at CVS. My gut suspicion is that the CVS retail arm is not where they make the bulk of their income. But I haven't had the time or inclination to go look at their quarterly statements.

If that's the 'free beauty product up to $5' q you're referencing, from what I've read, I think the coupon only gives you credit towards the price of one item, so I think it will only take off $2.50, even if you buy 4.

I read through wiki twice and Erica's unadvertised deals and didn't see Poparazzi $8 ecb listed. I remeber reading in old thread thst it was toll 23rd but I might be wrong

It's in the ad...buy two and get $4 ECB, limit two, so that's why I said $8 ECB. It's the Poparazzi cosmetics, but I thought the nail polish was includded in the ECB.

Its marketing. People tend to be brand specific. This drives them to a brand. For example, my mother - only uses Colgate. Not Crest. She will buy it when its not on sale becuase that is the brand she likes. So if you use Colgate TP, you might also try their toothbrushes that are not on sale - or their mouthwash.

It could also be marketshare grab.

They could also have a deal with CVS - so maybe they dont reimburse CVS in full - but CVS gets the advantage of people coming in and buying other products - some at full price - or to fulfill prescriptions.

But I am a tax guy (and do not work for CVS or Colgate) - The marketing / advertising is another department....
