For the vast majority of users this will be just fine. Yes, write speeds fall off a cliff if you are transferring large amounts of files (500 MB/s drops to around 100). But it takes about 100 GB for the 1TB model or about 800GB for the 4TB model before the cache is overwhelmed.

But as you say, if you work with 100's of GB of video you should get a more expensive and faster drive like the Crucial X8, the WD Passport, or the Samsung T7

You could keep them there more or less indefinitely, though eventually you'll need to move them to a different medium once the world moves on from USB-C at some point. It's a relatively new standard and backed by the industry, but nothing is forever.

That said, ultimate lifespan isn't all that important though because this will be only one of the two or three copies you'll keep of your photos, right?

Almost ordered one but looks like these aren't great if you work with large files like video editing.

How well would this work for using as the hard drive for DVR purposes to record live tv? Looking to use this with my NVIDIA Shield Pro

Let's say I store all my family photos on this. How many years/decades will the data stay in storage?

X8 is twice as fast, was recently $99 on Amazon. Also included a USB A to USB C adaptor.

Just for those looking for speed. Otherwise this drive is quick enough and good for general storage.

My Tesla can port is a normal USB A slot so I'm curious if a USB C to A cable would work?

I've been told before that SSD is not forever like hard drive where the information is retained forever as long as you preserve the drive. SSDs lose charge overtime and data can become corrupt/lost. If you have it plugged in as at all times or connect it every few months then it should be fine.

Wonder how these would be for a steam library. Yaknow for the steam deck.
