Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

  • It is a crappy tent and you'll get wet with any rain and even with dew in the morning.
  • It is not a 6 person tent, even by the generous person/tent standards.
  • The foam sleeping pads are straight out of the 1970s.
  • The sleeping bags are probably garbage.
  • Realize the count of this "28 piece set" includes 9 tent stakes, a couple of random tent pockets, and some sacks.

If you want a tent for the kids to play around with in the backyard then this is probably not the worst $78 you'll spend. But please do not buy this for any real camping because you'll just be miserable and never want to go camping again.

Reviews say the chairs are essentially for children only. And 9 tent stakes count for 9/28 pieces? Really? Get what you pay for here.

I've read all the warnings about the leaks from Ozark tents, etc. I live in Arizona, so I thought, "who cares?" Well, it rained the first night out with our cheap tent and it was perfectly fine. The rainfly got a little saggy, but held up through the night.

I think these tents will be fine if you're a casual camper. Just unpack it in your backyard before you use it the first time and make sure the seams look good. Or you can spray some waterproofer on it to be sure.

I've never been disappointed by REI tents, but glancing at the current selection and reviews, I am not sure I'd recommend them without more research.

In general, you want a tent that has a rain fly (the part that covers the actual tent) that fully extends to the ground on all four sides, so the rain can't possibly get into the tent and rolls off the sides and away from you, plus it also forms a some space where it won't get wet but also isn't inside your tent (think shoes and other gear). You'll also want a ground cloth to isolate the tent from the ground and water seepage, although this can be as simple as a 3rd party cheap tarp.

Otherwise, buy what you'll want to carry. If you're spending a week in the Boundary Waters and portaging all of your gear, a light or super light weight tent might make sense. If you're maybe hiking a couple miles from the car, something bigger and heavier isn't unreasonable. A three season tent is perfect for most people - if you're camping in sub-zero temperatures, you'll know what you need.

The tent keeps you dry, which is the most important part. But also invest in a decent Thermorest pad and sleeping bag appropriate for the conditions you'll be camping in.

I disagree. We have an older version of this tent (and have given this one as a gift) and it's been quite the trooper, and a great tent for two or three people. It's made it through summer monsoons and wind storms better than our larger, more expensive tents. As with any tent, you should use seam sealant and use a water resistant spray for the fly.

The chairs are decent as well, if a bit undersized. I can't say a lot about the sleeping bags, as my set didn't come with them, but the ones in the set I gifted at least serve to work as a pad for the air mattress I also gave them or an extra blanket. Some of the other items should add value as well.

In all I'd say this is a solid deal for somebody looking to try out car camping.

edit: One thing I'll recommend is to add a footprint (you can use a cheap tarp folded to fit under the tent, and buy decent replacement steel stakes. This holds true for almost any tent.

They asked for a recommendation. My recommendation is do not buy this style of tent that has been disappointing campers for generations.

I appreciate your experience and I totally agree on the footprint/ground cloth recommendation as well as the seam sealant, but in general, this style of tent has disappointed campers for generations. Any design that allows rain to directly touch the actual tent is going to leak eventually. Either through the seams or the zipper or sometimes even just through the material (I've seen that happen).

That said, the it all depends on your requirements. This might be a great tent in dryer environments or certain types of trips. But just like a good sleeping bag, when the SHTF, no one ever complains about overspending on a quality tent.
