You're in a security booth with a "power" meter. Doing stuff - like watching a camera - takes power.
You flip between mostly static images across a series of ~10 cameras watching for things to happen.
Eventually the animatronics start moving and doing stuff (though still primarily you're looking at static images).
Beyond the cameras you can turn the lights on in the hall to your left and to your right. There are also blast doors to each side you can close. All of that takes power.
At some point the animatronics get close enough that you need to watch the hall for when they appear there. Then you close the door and wait for them to go away. Then you open the door.
If you miss catching one of the animatronics, when you switch out of looking at a camera or change perspective, it jump scares you (eg freddy is right in your face screaming).
It starts out VERY slow (to the point where in the PAID iPAD GAME you can buy an IAP to make time go faster), but picks up a bit and more starts to happen.
For those of you who remember when video games could be put on a compact disc, it kinda reminds me of Night Trap except far less story, far less going on, and static images instead of video clips.
Dunno if games after 1 start out faster. I'd hope so; it took me several tries to not get horribly bored because NOTHING HAPPENED for several minutes. Ooph.
