CVS is one of the few places that take PayPal QR codes as payment. It's been recommended to use self checkout, if possible. Once you add the gift card, DO NOT click any payment method on the self checkout terminal. Instead, scan your PayPal QR code like you are buying something. Then it will allow you to checkout and pay with PayPal.
If it does indeed stack with the 2% back at drug stores as the other thread suggests, that's 11% back on up to $1500.

If you live near Giant Eagle supermarkets, they accept Paypal.
Lowe's and Home Depot only accept Paypal on their website, not in their stores.
.
so in theory you should get back $45 for the 500 GC ?
Can we use up the 5% for freedom and then convert it to flex and have the 9% again?
That entire $1500 needs to be spent on groceries or gas or home improvements.
That's the gotcha in all of this.
If you spend $1000 using Paypal at Home Depot and $500 using Paypal at Walgreens.com, you get 9% on that $1000 at Home Depot and 7% on the $500 at Walgreens.

That is correct. In the terms and conditions, it writes "Your top spend category will be calculated at the end of the offer period, December 31, 2021. Please allow up to 8 weeks after the end of the offer period for your bonus cash back to post to your account."
Chase Freedom is now end of life. Flex line is the new version replacing it. You can apply for Flex with only a short temporary credit score hit. Managed properly, you won't have to worry about Chase 5/24 rule.
Why not convert freedom to flex? That would be proper 5/24 mgmt. Besides bonus, the only con is another Warehouse Club Qtr i. e. Costco, I hope it happens again.

Provided you already have PayPal key some (myself) can't get it as they discontinued sign ups apparently

There was (is?) a Flex signup offer of 5% for the first year of using the card! Maybe a new card would have been better?
