I'm going to go ahead and disagree with pretty much everything you said here. The over-dramatization is a bit much. This is a perfectly capable sander for pretty much any woodworking hobbyist.

Perhaps you don't do anything with your arms and they're basically spaghetti, but the vibrations from this will not "eat through your arms."

Anyone who's looking for a solid sander need look no further. You don't need variable speed. What you do need is some decent sand paper in various grits. If you're on a budget then I'd suggest Diablo's stuff (harbor freight if you're on a tight budget). And if you're looking to up your sanding game a bit then you should consider Mirka's disks. They're considerably better quality and as such they last considerably longer, but of course you'll pay more.

I would suggest that you avoid battery powered sanders in general. they may be okay for a quick job you have right now, but down the road when you've a bigger project that requires considerably more sanding, you may kick yourself.

Frankly they both suck at dust collection. Frankly all sanders do. You're going to want to have a shop vac connected at a minimum if you're worried about dust (as you should be).

Any bullet points claiming superiority with dust collection is marketing hyperbole.

Wear a good mask that seals to your face. Trend's Stealth masks have become my go-to. They don't ever fog up my glasses. And, attach a vac/dust collector.

I worked in a cabinet shop for years and this is pretty much the only sander we used. Considering the amount of sanding we did, they are quite durable. The pads and switches wore out before pretty much anything else on the sander.

I can't say if this is better than a variable speed as we never used variable speed sanders.

Been using this weekly for two years. I am a weekend hobbyist who casually makes cutting boards and shelves for local folks and on Etsy. This sander has been more than capable and this is a great price. Everyone's experience is different but I actually was given a rigid sander when I started a few years back and stopped using it once I got this one. Hope this helps!

How is the dust collection on the Dewalt versus the Rigid? Rigid claims 90% dust collection.

Never really gotten the appeal of cordless sanders. Unless you're working on something outdoors away from civilization, that is.

You'll always want to connect a shop vac at the very least for anything you do indoors, and if you're connecting a shop vac, you might as well plug the sander in.

I have an older Ridgid 5" and a Bosch 6" ROS. I love the Bosch and the Ridgid is okay. Variable speed is a must to me.

if you are using it briefly it should be good. IMHO, when I am sanding a deck the stupid thing comes off all the time (EDIT NOTE sanding a deck is vertical and horizontal which makes the dust bag come off, plus lots of corners and rails and spindles/balusters hit the bag). As far as capturing dust, it's ok, I normally take the dust bag out to the customers yard and dump it about 1 time an hour or so. Really heavy stuff it is more often. Sometimes I sand for hours at a time, other times it is only about 30-45 minutes. I have 4 of these dewalts, they do their job. If you plan on using it a lot, I would suggest buying an additional velcro pad as they wear out over time. Just check which Velcro pad you are buying, one is the 3 screw one and one is the 4 screw one (models change over time). I replace a lot of pads, but I haven't replaced a sander yet. I have one that is at least 15 years old with a bad switch, but it sands the best. I keep that one in my garage for woodworking and take the newer ones to the job site.

So tempted to buy another one to have as a backup and actually keep in the box.

I used to say there are a few types of sanders. There are: Those over $200. And those that will eat your arms up so bad that you will look like Ace Ventura after getting darted and his arms went limp.

But Bosch made a really great new sander that's cordless (and you get a 4ah battery, charger, bag for free with it at lowes).

So if you go below $130, then every extra dollar you spend over $30, is a waste.
If the vibrations are that bad you might not be applying enough pressure and just letting the tool dance all over the surface. I have a similar sander, Dewalt with multispeed. If I lift it off to check the surface a and leave it running the vibrations get uncomfortable, pushing down at a normal pressure, it is fine though.

I got my cordless as part of a kit, planned on selling it but I am glad I did not. Dont get me wrong, I 100% agree with you, any serious sanding job means I am pulling out the corded version because I don't have to worry about battery life, its more comfortable, and considerably lighter. That said, sometimes I make a cut or just need to very quickly sand a rough spot down and for that its is an amazing luxury.

Yes, you could use this for sanding a car, not sure how effective it would be or how long they last as I only use mine for quick jobs and otherwise use a variable speed corded. With the proper attachments you could use it to "wax" a car, though it would not be the best tool for that job.

I have this unit and the variable speed Milwaukee. I use both in the wood shop.

I use the DeWalt for quick removal and the Milwaukee for more detailed sanding. Nice to have both.

I was wondering why you think the Bosch 12v sander is horrible? I'm on the fence between the 18v and 12v Bosch sanders.
