You might be referring to "kobe" wagyu which is more limited and rare. There's several different wagyus from Japan you can get.
most likely. as far as I can remember I think only 2 or 3 restaurants in the US get actual kobe wagyu, 1 being Cote in nyc.

What in the world does that mean?
Im pretty sure 8 oz of muscle and fat are the same no matter what grade it is
A5 is very rich. a person that eats a 12-16oz steak normally would likely have issues with a 4-8oz A5 steak. This alone is primarily why I do not buy it in large sizes and stick to 12oz which is enough of a "treat" for 4 people.

Just got 2 1lbs a5 wagyu steaks at costco for $100/lbs, and couldn't even finish 1. When they say this stuff is rich and you can't eat a lot, it's very true. it's similar to eating 50% fat 50% meat, but for some reason it tastes so good.

To top it off, after eating almost a whole steak, my stomach was not feeling well... for reference, i'm a fat bastard that loves meat.

Anyways... i recommend you try it once, but get smaller quantities.

You've obviously never had real wagyu. It's extremely rich and high in fat making you feel full faster than traditional steaks.
Exactly. I cut ours in to 1x3" strips and only eat a few of them. More than enough for me.
If you have a hardy stomach you might be okay, but usually on a small portion is more than enough. It's simply too rich.

How long will it last in the freezer
Depends on how you store it. If you vacuum seal it after cutting it up, it should last a good while.

As reported last time, a lot of warehouses now sell this product in the freezer section in reasonable quantities for $100/lb.

For *most* people this will be a more reasonable size and purchase. Unlike normal steak, 8 oz is a lot of wagyu for one person.
My local Costco only has A5 Ribeye for $100/lb... Curious if I'll prefer the NY

I've had both, and I honestly prefer the NY strip. Which is funny, because for prime beef I prefer Ribeye.
However, if you've never tried it, the ribeye A5 is still amazing.

Also, don't be scared of cooking this meat. It is SUPER forgiving due to the fat content. I've actually cooked one up to 165 F internal temp and it was still amazingly rich and delicious. Not my preference, but it really showed me that it was pretty hard to screw up.
You can also cut it into thin strips and use a torch on each side.

I did buy the Ribeye and it tasted good, but almost too fatty and tender if there's such a thing. I think I'd prefer the hopefully more chew of the NY

If ignorance means that I am not buying $100/lb steak, then ignorance is probably a good thing.
He has a point, folks.

Does he? some people like food and would rather spend money on that than let's say spending money on going to a football game , or season tickets, or camping, or on their car. why is it ignorant to spend money on something you enjoy? you're statement and his alone is the definition of ignorance.

The ribeye is definitely an extremely rich flavor, so yes: you'll probably much prefer NY strip
