Sorry for going down a rabbit hole, but these batteries are actually 36v, so 36vx4Ah= 144Wh. Count on a new battery delivering no more than 95% of its rated power, and 85% efficiency for the inverter is not an unreasonable estimate.

The 40v inverter with a new 4Ah battery would likely keep a 60W incandescent bulb lit for (144Wh)(.95)/(60W)/(.85) = 1.9 hrs, not 2.5 hrs.

For a small load like a 12W LED bulb the inverter's idle load current becomes a big factor. I've measured the idle draw current on this inverter to be about 8.3W. Therefore with a new 4Ah battery this inverter will keep a 12W LED bulb illuminated for more like (144Wh)(.95)/(12W+8.3W)/(.85) = 5.7 hours, not 13 hours.

I've measured the built-in LED light as drawing 2.1W. One might think that with a 4Ah battery and no other load the built-in LED could remain illuminated for (144Wh)/2.1W = 68.6 hours. But no, with the idle draw factored in the time is more like (144Wh)(.95)/(2.1W+8.3W)/(.85) = 15.5 hrs.

I really like the Ryobi 40v inverter, but it does have its limits. IMHO it's well worth $50, especially if you already own one or more of the batteries.
40V x 4aH battery = 160 watt-hours. So a 60 watt lightbulb for 2.5hours.
Or a 12 watt LED bulb for 13 hours?

Ooh got excited for the 18v one, but it's currently in store only.

When is ryobi going to make a 18V inverter/charging station for multiple batteries? I'd scoop one up in a heartbeat. I have a single 40V battery for my weed eater, so this is tempting though.

I'm SUPER invested in the 18v set.

Should I get into the 40v also?? What is everyone's opinion on the 40v family?

Keep checking the DTO site. I scored two of those 18V inverters 2 days ago.

Can you even buy a 60w bulb anymore? A 60w equivalent LED bulb (8w) would go for 20 hours

The 40v one is excellent. In addition to having a higher maximum wattage that the 18v, it is also a pure sine wave inverter, which is pretty much unheard of in this price range.

Can you explain that bit? I've heard people mention that but don't know why it matters (the sine wave)

Have had 40v outdoor equipment for a few years (flex head whacker with a custom 10' hedge trimmer attachment, brushless chainsaw upsized with a 16" bar and .050 chain, regular hedge trimmer, 525 mph jet blower). It's been a solid lineup that has kept me from buying Milwaukee or Dewalt outdoor equipment, even though I have HO/Flexvolt batteries. I have more than one battery and have gotten decent run time, even with my power hungry tools and adapters.

Biggest tip is to not run the batteries all the way down, or store them drained - they will go into a sleep mode that will make them seem dead. There are some YouTube videos on how to revive them out there, and you may even find some 'free' revivable batteries in the battery recycle bins at your local home improvement store, if you are into hardcore slickdealin.

Yeah the point is 160 / (watts of appliance) gives you runtime in hours on a 4Ah battery (roughly - need to subtract conversion losses) and I chose something that's close to the average wattage of an led tv.

I have the 40v mower, chainsaw, pole saw, and various other tools. They work great!
