I don't think many people buy DVDs anymore. Blu-rays and 4K though? Yes!

I have a ton and probably do not get my money's worth in re-watching them, but there are quite a few titles which aren't available elsewhere (streaming), or come and go from other services.

For me, and probably most, the biggest benefit with these are the quality. 4k disc versus 4k/HD streaming just aren't the same. If you have a large OLED set and a Dolby Atmos setup, there's a huge difference from disc to digital, and that's what justifies the upgrade.

The same title will look and sound very different to someone who is into home theater. If you just want to watch a movie and don't really care about much else? Streaming is totally fine, blu-ray is totally fine and if it comes down to it, even DVD might be fine

I would say close to zero
Except there are four 4K versions that are 50% off.

Citizen Cane
Uncut Gems
Menace II Society
Mulholland Drive

Criterion on just started doing 4K this year, so there aren't many to choose from. Newest ones like Hard Days Night are still full price.

Most of the in-store selection has much to be desired. But as far as online, w00t w00t.

I wonder if Arrow Video, Cohen media and the other usuals will be added this year.

As an added bonus, some of the more popular titles are also price matched on Amazon in case that's your forte.

You may be surprised to find out that DVDs have always outpaced bluray in sales. People still buy more DVDs today than blus. Just recently last year I think, digital media finally outpaced physical media in sales.

Especially when you can stream for free.
Quality is shit in most streams. You're paying for picture and sound as well

Nice! Been waiting to get Beasts of No Nation on blu ray so I can watch it without the Netflix compression. The Barnes and Noble closest to me closed down during covid. Gotta go further to find a location that's still in business.

I got these in the past since they're the definitive HD transfers:
The Squid and the Whale
Pan's Labyrinth
Eraserhead

And some french foreign language films that aren't available through other publishers in the states:
Le Havre
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Portrait of a Lady on Fire should look magnificent on the Criterion release. The cinematography is beautiful. I may need to pick that up myself. πŸ€”

So many of these are great. The criterion transfers are worth it! On my LG OLED and (this is the key) Atmos setup, I actually prefer a good transfer Blu ray physical to most 4k streams. The audio is that much better and these compression of most streams is pretty noticable. Gonna head to a physical BN for the first time in awhile. Thanks!

All Criterion 4K titles are new this month, so I would be pretty surprised if they drop further
