From past experience, the biggest issue with these is Kindle Kids app itself.

The 32gb storage is nowhere near enough

The Kids+ app is terrible about making use of additional storage you add via the SD card
Supposedly it will make better use of it if you put the app in and do a factory restore, but that means kids lose all progress in their games / apps
The 32gb fills up VERY fast with the Kids+ subscription

The parental controls are terrible, especially if you're trying to keep things somewhat limited for younger kids

They only allow blocking apps vs. setting an allow list -- that means that any new games added to the app store are automatically available
You can only control what's blocked via the app, not via the parents dashboard on the web
In the UI to block apps, you can either search for things by title (making you scroll through books & movies to get to apps) or you can pick from a grid of icons (filtering to just apps). If you want to explore what's available to pick & choose and aren't familiar with what the app icons are for everything, there's no good way to do that.
You can set limits to say that "educational apps" must be played a certain amount of time before other apps can be opened, but you're left to rely on the app store categories to determine what counts as "educational"

There's no way to backup progress in games installed via the Kids+ app. The storage for those is super locked-down and not accessible via the regular file system.

Highly recommend using Fire Toolbox for this. Even if its just for kids the regular OS is really restrictive and ruins the tablet experience.

It definitely is. My almost 4 year old loves his. Not having to deal with paid apps is great, but you do have to delete apps regularly because the young kids don't understand the concept of drive space.

I was going to buy two of these to replace my kid's Kindles (using the 20% off when trading in) but then I realized these are the same as the ones I was trading in, which were purchased for this price over 2 years ago.

We have two of these. The parental controls are terrible. There is a website for parent complaints and for Amazon to ignore. Not one positive change in the ~two years we've had these, only platitudes.

The content they give you with the "screened" freetime plan is often entirely inappropriate. The recommendation is to watch, then manually backlist, all of the trashy videos you don't want your small child to watch. There is no whitelist option.

The only good thing I can say is their replacement policy is truly no questions asked. But then… they sent us a new version of the tablet, which was a two edged sword. We had to buy the new cover ourself.. This is Amazon customer service you'll be dealing with. You have to ask yourself, "Is it worth the pain?"

I'm actually thinking about changing our kindles out for iPads this year. It's expensive, and we are already invested in these, but I'm sick of sending Amazon subscription fees for a terrible product and terrible services.

I almost got the regular 10" for my 8 year old, but then realized it was intended for kids 3 - 7.

I ended up switching it to the pro. I don' really know what the difference is, but it says for kids 6 - 12.

Got a 25 dollar trade in credit, which applies instantly, and 20% off. 78 and change after tax, not bad.

The entire point of this tablet is that it has parent control.

Doing XDA Amazon Tool Box, will eliminate parent control.

I agree with you... I would get a regular Fire HD10 and use a third party app to add in parental control if that is your thing.

But even after you do XDA Amazon Tool Box on a regular Fire HD10, you can only install Youtube Kids, etc...

Bought 4 of these for 4 children at this price on Prime Day. Sat down to set them up night before a long trip. Couldn't log into Netflix, no one at Netflix or Amazon could help. Downloaded a bunch of the shows to the tablets for offline viewing from their selection plus some games. Got on the road, and once we were without WIFI, all of the shows except for one or two and many of the games disappeared. Haven't ever figured out why a tiny selection worked offline when downloaded for offline viewing. Eventually Netflix worked, but I will obviously after the trial not be paying for their service that doesn't work when on the road which is my only use case, and will manually load up videos myself.
