So all I can say is I bought two Acer Spin 1 2-in-1s over the past year and a half. They have Pentium N5000 CPUs which apparently are about 25% more powerful then the one listed here. They also have 4GB of RAM.

My kids just wanted to start playing Minecraft so we installed it and it runs so slow it is basically unplayable, even when I tuned down the settings.

So, how this thing can advertise as a "Minecraft" laptop is just ridiculous. It seems it is just branding, but don't expect to actually be able to play Minecraft on it.

These were barely powerful enough to get them through early grades during COVID at home. Basic web browsing at best.

This does come with the MS Store version of Minecraft, which is the Bedrock edition rather than the Java edition. The difference is that Bedrock is far more optimized at the expense of being less customizable and platform specific. Most kids don't care.
I've run Minecraft Bedrock on much older Atom processors (z8750) and it works well enough at 720p. This will run it just fine.

EDIT: Ok maybe the z8750 isn't older than the N3450...

All of these Atom-based laptops definitely struggle with Windows. They're beasts for ChromeOS, and Linux can be made to run well, but for Windows your standard entry-level machine should employ four big cores (think i-series vs. Atom) and 8GB of RAM. Typically these days the refurb space starts at around $280-300, but thanks to early BF deals there have been some relatively awesome retail devices appearing in the $340 range(!).

I'm honestly shocked that this thread has remained so quiet given that the sub $200 Windows space is almost universally a source of excitement for Slickdeals despite the aforementioned issues. However, I realize that this is the first post for the user (vs. a paid advertisement).

Good luck!
Jon

Yeah, I realized after I posted that this was likely the bedrock full version.
I'm sure it runs faster than the Java, but all my point still stand.
If the Java version can run on my laptop at what is maybe 5-10 fps, that gives you a pretty good idea of what this lesser laptop offers.
I mean look, for $130 it is a decent deal if you need really basic browsing. But for most people, something like this is going to be discarded due to frustration.

These cheap machines used to come with 1 yr MS office subscription. Anyone know if they still come with one?

This actually seems like a pretty nifty little device, and it comes with Minecraft and a 1 year Office subscription. Seems like a pretty good deal if you know what you're getting and can accept it. This should do most of what your average person needs to do without any issue. I think Minecraft is a bit of wishful thinking, though...

Note that:

1. This does not support Windows 11.

2. This will run like absolute garbage unless you put in some major work after receiving it. You will need to upgrade Windows 10 S to the full version, then do a complete reinstall of Windows 10 from a USB drive, then disable (a) indexing, (b) antivirus, and (c) updates. Probably the store as well.

If #2 sounds crazy and makes you uncomfortable, then this is not a laptop for you, I'm afraid. You will need to shell out the dough for more capable hardware.

I was in best buy picking out a new Chromebook the other day but thought, hey, I'll give this a look as a cheaper option. The touchpad is rough plastic, the screen is barely 200 nits, dull, and washed-out all at once, and it doesn't feel like it will stand up to a kid for long. The MSRP on this is a laugh for sure.

I think this is a good deal given it's 2021. Nothing close since Black Friday 2020. In for 2 for my kids homeschooling (their program needs Windows) unless if something else better pops up. Not opposed to paying more. Thought about that Target $180 but I have sworn to not buy anything else dual core after my last experience with one. Hoping something better comes along by BF in this $150ish space but if not, these will have to do.
