Can anyone recommend the cheapest headset that is serviceable for a 10 year old.
Kids don't care about spatial audio or surround sound so I'd get something within a $10-20 range. Considering the holidays are coming up I'd wait and see what pops up around that range. Usually I get one or two for the kids jic.

The Basics
Headset with non-detachable mic
Swivel-to-mute mic
3.5mm plug with 3.5mm-to-USB adapter (adapter required for Virtual 7.1)
Earcups rotate 90 degrees for quick breaks w/o removing headset
The Good
Adjustable steel sliders with large range
Very comfortable earcups, even when wearing glasses
Very good sound quality
Analog volume slider on headset
Because of 3.5mm connector, can be used with any 3.5mm jack (altho w/o Virtual 7.1). Besides gaming, it works well for online conferencing
The Bad
Nothing!
Other
Virtual 7.1 surround sound does seem to work, but it does require use of the USB adapter plus the HyperX NGENUITY software. I'm not sure if the PC is actually doing the work or if the dongle is; if the latter, it would have been nice to just have a hardware switch on the dongle and no need for the software.
Edit - I realize now this is for the wired version. I have the wireless, so disregard this apparently.
Got a pair used very good condition off of Amazon for ~$17 a while back. Work well and battery life is good. The audio does very occasionally drop out even when I am close. I could play for hours and have no issues but then it might drop out for a fraction of a second two or three times in a minute. The audio quality seems ok, though I'm sure there are far better options if that is the goal. Not a huge issue for me, but if 100% reliability is desired then a wired set would probably be better (or could just use the 3.5mm connection, but I haven't). The 7.1 just sounds stereo to me, but maybe there is a difference I can't tell. Comfortable if I am wearing my contact lenses, but with glasses give me a headache, but every pair of headphones I have ever tried does that to me. I haven't tried the mic.

You must be comparing a different model; this is a wired set without a battery.
Since this headset provides a 3.5mm to USB A dongle I'm asumming you could turn any 3.5mm headset you own into a 7.1 surround sound headset by just plugging it into the dongle and then turning on the 7.1 surround sound using the "Ngenuity" software on your PC. If so, this makes this pretty slick IMHO.
