SN550: gen 3, DRAMless
SN750: gen 3, DRAM
SN750SE: gen 4, DRAMless
SN850: gen 4, DRAM
They're completely different drives.
The non-SE is an older model. PCI-E gen 3 with DRAM. The SE is a newer model with PCI-E gen 4, but no DRAM.
Being gen 4, the SE isn't bottlenecked by the interface (and it's why it works for the PS5, because it checks if the drive is gen 3 or gen 4), but since the SE is DRAMless, in many other ways, it's worse than the non-SE. The PCI-E gen 4 support is kinda moot because the drive's performance is limited by the lack of DRAM. The main benefit to the SE is PS5 support and slightly better power efficiency, while the non-SE has more well-rounded performance.
Yes, it worked in my kids ps5. Bought it last week on the Amazon deal for $99. Moved a few games to this drive, tested them and they all worked flawlessly. Read speed given by the ps5 was a little over 5000.
*Edit: it was a SN750.

Nope, you should have a drive that has a sequential read speed of 5500 MB/s. The SN850 exceeds that.
I put a 2TB SN850 with an aftermarket heat sink, works flawlessly. I would recommend once they restock the heat sink models just go that route for easiest.
Will it work PS5? Seems doubtful I'm not sure if non-PS5 games still work, but I wouldn't try it for PS5 specific games.

Don't listen to the naysayers. 750 SE is perfectly compatible with PS5. It has been tested by Digital Foundry and others that it has little to zero performance impact on the PS5

Still great for most people's uses though
