750 SE is Gen4, SN750 is PCIe 3.0

SE vs non SE version differences?

The sequential read speed is faster in the SE version, but the sequential write speed is faster in the non-SE version. Other than this, looks identical.
if your chipset is z97 (or older) it'll only perform at PCIe X2 speeds.

Would I see any benefit with this in an older desktop? I would need to purchase the pci adapter card to make it work. At what point does my bus not keep up with the additional speed you get with this drive?

Whya 20$ difference between SN750 and SN550 ?
SN750 SE is gen4
Quote from zethlyn View quoted comment :
Looks like the SE has pcie 4.0. Other 750 has 3.0, if Newegg's website is to be believed
Quote from kingkakyle View quoted comment :
Pretty sure these are pcie gen 3 not gen 4
Still great for most people's uses though

too slow for gaming rig, good for general purpose SSD maybe

Go with 980 Pro or SN850 for gaming
This is so false its not even funny. Ssd has been shown to shave off like 0.1 second from loading screen between sata ssd and pci4 ssd

Please ensure you add "Except Alaska and Hawaii on the Shipping" WD automatically added 2 day shipping cost. Be aware SD embers Its not always free shipping - Amazon Prime is Free Shipping. Maybe I will have to try @bestbuy to Price match or find on amazon because we do get Prime shipping.

If your motherboard doesn't have a native M.2 slot on it, you should double-check boot support compatibility. Older motherboards don't have boot support for NVMe drives on PCIe cards. There are ways to get around this, using a bootloader, like Clover, but that's not ok with some people.

enclosure recommendations?
Keep in mind that putting this drive in an enclosure will likely result in less performance, since the interface will be slower than what the drive is capable of. You will see roughly 1/3 the performance with the fastest USB (USB 3.1 Gen 2=10Gb/sec or 1,250MB/sec).

if your laptop supports NVMe, both will run fine - the SE will probably not get the rated read throughput because of your older bus but does allow you to put it into systems that check for PCIe 4.0 compatibility later on, but it does sacrifice a little in write speeds (although that may be unnoticeable by most).

SN550: gen 3, DRAMless
SN750: gen 3, DRAM
SN750SE: gen 4, DRAMless
SN850: gen 4, DRAM

They're completely different drives.

The non-SE is an older model. PCI-E gen 3 with DRAM. The SE is a newer model with PCI-E gen 4, but no DRAM.

Being gen 4, the SE isn't bottlenecked by the interface (and it's why it works for the PS5, because it checks if the drive is gen 3 or gen 4), but since the SE is DRAMless, in many other ways, it's worse than the non-SE. The PCI-E gen 4 support is kinda moot because the drive's performance is limited by the lack of DRAM. The main benefit to the SE is PS5 support and slightly better power efficiency, while the non-SE has more well-rounded performance.

True for now however when games using direct storage start releasing for the PC this will certainly change since it's a requirement to have a gen 4 NVMe to take advantage of it just like current gen consoles.

Except consoles are closed systems and pcs are not. So developers can't code solely for pci4 ssd
