SN550: gen 3, DRAMless
SN750: gen 3, DRAM
SN750SE: gen 4, DRAMless
SN850: gen 4, DRAM
They're completely different drives.
The non-SE is an older model. PCI-E gen 3 with DRAM. The SE is a newer model with PCI-E gen 4, but no DRAM.
Being gen 4, the SE isn't bottlenecked by the interface (and it's why it works for the PS5, because it checks if the drive is gen 3 or gen 4), but since the SE is DRAMless, in many other ways, it's worse than the non-SE. The PCI-E gen 4 support is kinda moot because the drive's performance is limited by the lack of DRAM. The main benefit to the SE is PS5 support and slightly better power efficiency, while the non-SE has more well-rounded performance.
The sequential read speed is faster in the SE version, but the sequential write speed is faster in the non-SE version. Other than this, looks identical.
Would I see any benefit with this in an older desktop? I would need to purchase the pci adapter card to make it work. At what point does my bus not keep up with the additional speed you get with this drive?

I forgot it wasn't pcie 4
970 evo plus 2tb
Ps5 wouldn't even start, said m2 drive Incompatible had to remove it before would boot up.
Not sure how this 750 being pcie 3 would work.

Still great for most people's uses though
