Nothing wrong with the pay once standalone version but it's an inferior product when compared to Microsoft 365. The standalone versions eventually need to be upgraded as mainstream support ends 5 years after the version is released.
Office Home & Student 2021 is $124.99 at a discount retailer (msrp is $149.99). Over 5 years the standalone is $60 cheaper but doesn't provide the additional features Microsoft 365 offers - 1TB cloud storage, install multiple PCs, mobile apps, feature updates that the standalone version doesn't receive (have to buy the next standalone version to get them), etc. For most, paying $60 more or $12 extra a year over 5 years is well worth it.
I have personally done so myself - I found an amazing deal on these, bought 3 of them, and applied all 3 to the same subscription. Each one pushed my subscription expiration date out by 1 year.

I have personally done so myself - I found an amazing deal on these, bought 3 of them, and applied all 3 to the same subscription. Each one pushed my subscription expiration date out by 1 year.

Based on the example, applying a key for a Microsoft 365 Family subscription to an account having 4 years of Microsoft 365 Personal will result in the account having 5 years of Microsoft 365 Family.
But again, that is just a guess based on the information available.
