Boss got the CPU from Amazon, he didn't order it. They said keep it, so he gave it to me he has no use for it, so I built up a system with it. They keep delivering him stuff he didn't order, some mix up with his address or something. He got a set of golf clubs I imagine was worth a few hundred alone.
There are a lot of red flags in the statements you've made here.

You can't buy a reasonable motherboard under $200 so I don't see any value in this unless you get it for free

Damnnnnn..... I guess I'm going to MC tomorrow morning.

*EDIT* shit.... I'm in Minnesota. $220 here. Well, I didn't want to build a new PC until I can get a 3080 anyways. Le sigh.

5600G (check if motherboard is compatible first) for $200 is a better bet to get a few extra FPS or wait a few weeks for a price drop in the rest of the line. (The 5600x is an all around better CPU.). The i5-12400 might also be a real winner.

The i7 is a step above a 3600, but not the best upgrade path here.

No. I have the 3600XT, not much different from 3600 and no reason to go to this, this would be a side grade. Skip. I only bought one to build a second rig for a different location, and only because I was able to get a cheap mobo. You'd be spending a lot of money for very little performance gain.

The new generation chips moving forward will have this big.LITTLE design, efficiency and performance cores, and be a more noticeable change from what you have now.

There's $20 off when you combo a mobo in store and they have a bunch of Z490s and Z590s still like the MSI Z490 A-Pro or Tomahawk.

I looked around the store at 6pm and there was still a bunch of the cpus in the shelf (bottom right side of the intel one). Employees and manager have no idea when the price will end, but I have a feeling it may be soon if it wasn't tonight.

Honestly having a hard time deciding whether to pull the trigger or not since my i5-2500k/GTX1070 setup is still running smoothly (aside from the usual HDD replacements after ~5 years, but been swapping out to SSDs). But then I just got a 3070 TI FE... or should I wait for a 3080 and go 12th gen? Decisions decisions...

You need to set Microcenter to the Tustin location to get the $150 price. BestBuy usually won't match this (I tried several times) unless you get really lucky. Even if you live in the area it's an in-store price and 1 per household which are basically their loss leader prices.

If you can get a price match this is an awesome deal but you may end up wasting a lot of time dealing with CS and getting nowhere.

It's very minimal gains so not worth it. You should wait for next Ryzen or 13th gen Intel at the earliest for next upgrade.
