It's actually a pretty nice feature. It uses pixie dust made exclusively by Tinker Bell. So with its magical powers, it attaches to the dust and makes it fly away from your house. The Roomba uses a different approach involving particle acceleration, which is more reliable but much more expensive.
I prefer the shark one because it is of a trusted american brand based in massachusetts, SharkNinja (the same company which makes Ninja cooking utencils and appliances). I prefer brands which you can actually contact for support. Shark also sells the spare parts for this vacuum. https://www.sharkclean.com/parts-...elf-empty/
The ihome one has lidar, but the shark one has two front brushes as well, so it has a wider range of cleaning.
Personally, I don't think mapping is that big of a deal and I don't mind robot vacs which bump around pathetically. A robot vac which takes 1hr to clean a room is still better than me not picking up a broom for weeks.
Lidar is better at navigation but the shark is only second to irobot in terms of pickup. I have the Costco version of this bot and with 2 dogs it does a great job in the most important aspect, VACUUMING!
I have a slightly different model (AV1010AE) but I have to say they work surprisingly well. I had a Neato BotVac and I'll take the Shark's suction and self empty over Neato's marginal better navigation.
I have had the Shark self empty from Costco for a few months. I prefer the autovacs nova which I now have for a few months. The Nova lidar mapping is far superior to shark camera mapping. Nova has better object avoidance as well. For me the Nova rivals the deebot T8 avi that costs way more.
I have this shark with the self-emptying base and it's pretty good. The house mapping kind of sucks but it vacuums well; feels solid and is easy to clean/empty. I don't regret buying it at all. It is my first smart vac so I can't speak to it compared to others but for a few hundred bucks it runs fine and cleans well.

I had this and returned it. The mapping sucks. I've had a lot of bot vacs and the only ones worse were the old ones that travel randomly and don't even try to map. Of anything I've had that attempts to map, this was easily the worst.

so these things are good with dog hair. Always wanted to grab one but my dog seems to shed nonstop

It's very good at vacuuming pet hair. For the price I'd argue you can't find a better deal for a robot vac. It has some faults, the first month it was all over the place with map issues etc. But they have updated the firmware and the last 6 months have been issue free. Even moved its base without having it remap and it did the remap itself with zero issues.

Can you virtually block off rooms or areas you don't want it to go, like the Neato? Just wondering because there are times I don't want it doing certain areas. Thanks.
I have a shark sale clean with mapping from Sam's Club. It does a decent job of cleaning, but regret the purchase as it deletes the map every time the app updates. So then I can't just have it clean one area.
I bought a $99 Tineco Dash to remedy this, and hardly use the robot now.
The self emptying doesn't get all the cat hair out, so I have to check it after every run. The battery gets really low before it covers the whole tile floor area since it has to remap everything so often.
I would say save your money and get something else.
Namely, a Tineco stick vac!

I understand the unit being self-empty, it would empty into the base..... but how does the base self-empties??
