Kindle Paperwhite prices (basic model w/ads) for the last five Black Fridays:

2020- $85
2019- $80
2018- Brand New model -$100 Prev. model- $80
2017- $76
2016-$75

Amazon was selling brand New Paperwhites for $30- $40 to Amazon members with Student accounts in Sept and October, so $60 for a Used one from Woot isn't much of a deal.

In the past, Amazon was showing "inappropriate" ads when the kindle was powered off, so you could complain to customer support that your kids were scarred by the words and images and they would remove ads for free. Seriously.

Is it OK to get the $35 one as first eReader and are we able to borrow books from libraries with this? Some libraries offer ebook rentals.

Has anyone ordered a refurb Kindle before?
Last week I ordered the basic Kindle for $50 but now I'm tempted to order a refurbished one and return the one that I just bought.

Or upgrade to the paper white.

Yes and Yes. I'm reading Dave Grohl's new autobiography I am borrowing digitally from my local library courtesy of Libby app. You install app on your phone and then you can select Read on Kindle and it will Import to your Kindle device for a 14 or 21 day rental (varies by library).

Can this be jailbroken and used as a "kiosk" to display something (like the weather)?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the "new" Kindle Paperwhite on sale for $30 the previous generation model? That's what the Amazon links on those pages say, anyway.

The newest Paperwhite model has USB-C and a larger screen.

That's the one with a light on it right? How do you like it and can you turn off the light?

You're right about the Paperwhite being a game/changer, and I'm ready to update to a newest version, but do you have any idea how to verify what version a Paperwhite is? TIA!

Yes to both questions! Great way to dip your toes into e-readers to see if it works for you. Also, borrowing books from libraries is a pretty easy process. Most libraries have dedicated sites for e-reader rentals and borrowing the book and putting it on your kindle is a pretty simple process as well.

I ordered a refurb kindle paperwhite from Woot in a previous sale earlier this year. It was a much older model than the one I already owned (which was already 3 years old at the time), but the differences between the two were very minor once I compared them in person. The refurb had a scratch or 2 on the back, but overall, I was happy with the purchase since it was only $30 at the time. It was slightly slower but the battery was fine, and the refurb has been a great backup.

I believe he is trying to say that the links provided for the "new" Kindle Paperwhites on sale previously for $30 were not for the current models but the previous 2018 generation Paperwhites.

I didn't even know Libby was a thing until a recent iPad purchase. It has completely blown my mind and I still don't know how this is free!
Not only can I rent books, but my local library also lets me rent magazines as well.

I'd be all over the $35 Kindle if it came in white Frown

I'm really on the fence on picking up a Kindle...I don't really need one as I'm using my iPad and am happy with that.

I think if the white ever comes on sale for $40 or less (even refurbished) I'll jump in.
