Slickdeals logged into my account without my permission?

5,076 828 November 13, 2021 at 11:34 AM
I noticed that unknown device was logged into my account recently from Las Vegas, NV. I don't live in Las Vegas and the IP address listed there came back as Slickdeals.

Two devices listed under Settings > Manage Devices area. I know one is my phone, another one is the unknown device. Looked up the IP address and it's from slickdeals.

Is this a bug or one of you guys actually logged into my account?

Thanks in advance.

Good catch !

Short answer is no, it's not us. We do not log into user accounts without permission not do we have passwords to do that anyway.

Long answer is a bit more involved.

As many large sites we use multiple layers of network services for scalability, reliability and defense against various malicious actors.

All of those services have their own IP addresses and when you chain many of them together while connecting to Slickdeals content, they all add their IP address into the chain that we ultimately observe once your connection finally reaches our servers.

Depending on your own connection (i.e. service you're using at that moment) you may go through some of them or not, it's hard to predict that.

So every so often your (or anyone else's) true IP may get 'lost' and instead we call back to the most recent known IP rather than not recording an IP at all.

So it's sort of a bug but not really one we can easily fix because we can't tell with certainty which service 'lost' your IP in the chain.

As always if you suspect that someone has control if your account, change your password and drop any clients you don't recognize from the list of logged in devices, but rest assured, it's not us or our staff.

Way to stay vigilant !
