If you purchased the item and have the receipt in-hand, then legally the item is yours. If they took it back and not offer you a refund, they stole from you.
In their state that law doesn't apply, mostly because this didn't happen.

At every other store, you need a cashier override to commit the self checkout purchase when the order is discounted to a high percentage. You're telling me that Home Depot doesn't require someone to come over and approve your transaction at the self checkout for a 1 cent item?

I've purchased a few penny items from HD in the past via the self checkout...each time no approval from cashier needed. Not sure if this has changed.

X HD Manager here. Items at .01 is the companies way of telling the store they are done trying to sell the item at a discount. Usually it goes from a higher price ending in .09, .06, .03 and then ends up at a single penny. The .03 indicates to the store that this item is going to a penny 3 weeks from the time the price change is accepted. So they know to get this item in front of customers to sell it before it becomes .01. Once the price change is accepted to take it from (for example) 25.03 to .01 then the store is supposed to find all of that item and dispose of it. Some stores used to have donation programs with local non profits for these items. Because ultimately the store is taking the hit because we have paid for the item.

Cashiers are instructed if a penny item gets to the register to not allow the customer to purchase it. But if you sneak through self checkout when someone isn't paying attention then it's yours.

If that doesn't make sense please feel free to ask questions and clarify.

Is 2 items in stock at clearance worth going to the HD for?

I don't know why some good deals get downvoted like that. It's demoralizing and it has stopped me from posting in the past. Thank you for the attempt.

Is 'limited' just 1 in stock? Or does that usually mean like floor model

I also experienced the same with solid oak wood flooring planks at HD, ultimately a HD employee checked with manager and told me that they were going to throw away them and that's why they were priced $0.01, but if I am interested to buy I can pay $50 to buy almost 14 boxes of planks original price $100+ for each box. I did not end up buying because I did not have a pick up truck and they were going to throw them away the same night or so.
