Honestly, I'd recommend the TIVO Stream 4k using Android TV that's currently on Clearance for $15 (or less... some stores are as low as $5) at Walmart. As always, Walmart Clearance implies ymmv 😉

https://brickseek.com/walmart-inv...=787014131

Then de-tivo using these instructions:

Enable Developer Mode by going to Device Preferences --> About --> Build and click it a few times until it tells you that you are a "Developer".

Then go to Device Preferences --> Developer Options--> USB Debugging and enable this option.

Go to Network & Internet --> Available Networks and click your connected WiFi network to see what your Stream's IP address currently is.

Download and install adblink

In adblink enter your Stream's IP address in the "Ad Hoc IP" field.

Click "Connect". You'll be prompted to accept the connection on the Stream itself - accept it and also remember the device if prompted.

Once adblink reports that you are connected click "ADB Shell"

Copy and paste the following commands in the terminal window:

pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.utsmta.app
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.tivo.tivoplusplayer
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.tivo.tvlaunchercustomization
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.droidlogic.overlay
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.nes.bugtracker
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.nes.tvglobalkeyhandler
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.nes.daemonservice
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.nes.skywayclient
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.droidlogic.SubTitleService
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.limark.deviqcoreagent
pm disable-user --user 0 com.tivo.atom
reboot

The above commands allow you to completely customize Android TV as a generic box without any Tivo locks and customizations.

Also, try using Wolf Launcher and you don't have to see advertisements. Just a super clean interface.

Also, the Tivo remote is loads better than the new Chromecast.

Most asked questions:
1) Does the cast feature work after de-tivo?
Yes, you can still cast after de-tivo.
2) Do you have to do this process again after a firmware update from Tivo?
Maybe... I honestly don't know. What I do know is firmware updates to any streaming stick happens maybe 2x a year if you're lucky. These sticks aren't maintained as often as a smartphone. That said, the de-tivo process takes roughly 5-10 minutes after you learn how to do it. 😉
The Google store will have a "Save $1O on Chromecast with Google TV" sale on 11/18 making them $39.99.
Make sure you use a virtual cc (privacy.com, capital one eno, etc) so that you do not have to remember to cancel the service.

I also guess I am too spoiled from the free netflix credit chromecasts, this deal just seems meh to me

Or just buy this chromecast instead of having to deal with all that for a slow, clunky, tivo device

Nice! For $10, I'd give it a try just because I love hacking things lol

I have 4 of these….they are okay. The lack of a decent storage on them to us, really make them obsolete. We have the basic streaming apps and are out of storage, maybe 10 total installed. They also tend to lag a bit too.

The photo frame is awesome though if you use Google photos.

Spending another $30 or so for some rigged/glitchy external storage isn't a solution.

FYI, you can use cashback portals to get extra cashback, I just confirmed my cashback site tracked this purchase and got $10 back. Nice!

Off topic question:

Is this what Im looking for? Chromecast?

I have Pixel 4a and I love the feature that can displays real time closed captioning whenever I turn that feature. I'm hearing impaired.

Now for some reason the pixel 4a for example doesn't work to mirror the phone on my Samsung 4K tv via HDMI cable from USB C of pixel 4a so I'm looking to fill in that middleman objects.

I'm not sure if you have any experience with a de-tivo'd 4k Stream but it's definitely not slow or clunky. It's even faster if you update the animation to .5x through the developer menu.

I've tested 4k YouTube videos over wifi and no studdering. Also, I've connected the 4K tivo via ethernet using a USB-C to ethernet adapter and streaming was just as solid as wifi.

You may have gotten a defective unit.

The instructions I provided are as straightforward as possible (without video). It takes less than 15 min to perform the whole operation. You can also Google "de tivo 4k Stream" and it takes you to the forum where I found these instructions. 😁

In store clearance. Just use the brickseek link I provided to find a local Walmart near you that has it on Clearance for $15 or less. Some stores actually have this for $5.
