Here is a comparison between Dolby Atmos, DTS, and Windows Sonic that you can listen to on headphones. Different people have different preferences because not all ear canals are the same.

Another wasted evening. It appears this DTS decoder is only for use in headphones, no DTS output at all through HDMI and optical on my receiver (even though it outputs DTS on the 'Test' feature and outputs fine on my Windows 7 machine). Would be nice if I could actually pay to use a feature instead of having to resort to custom drivers they try so hard to not let you use.
I own both. For anyone that doesnt know, this is basically for virtual surround sound using any pair of stereo headphones. Its useful because you dont have to buy those special gaming headphones you see twitch streamers wearing, you can use your own stereo headphones. You can also plug in your headphones into the xbox controller and have spacial sound for games on xbox. And you can test it out with that youtube video above. Anyways, the dolby app has way more configurations and EQ options, I do believe its slightly better for games and music. But the DTS recreates a theater setting better, so those superhero movies sound way more dynamic and fun using the DTS app. This is coming from a person use been using the two apps, dolby headphone, creative sbx, and yamaha silent theater virtual headphone options for a very long time. The dts app says it comes with a dts decoder or something for pc, ive never used it, never had to, i always output pcm to my receiver.

Would this type of thing output Dolby Digital or DTS sound through an optical cable? I have a very old receiver that accepts these 5.1 signals from my old Windows 7 machine but my Win10 only does Stereo no matter what surround option I choose.

I tried using a custom RealTek sound driver that gives me Dolby Digital Live and DTSX, but every Windows update disables it and for some reason now, disables my headphone jack.

What's the regular price for these? I see you have to download the app for free first, then you probably pay in-app after the trial?

Are these mostly for streaming apps, or also games. This is specifically for Dolby Atmos.

Any idea if this is limited to just one device? I have 2 PCs and an Xbox Series X linked to the same Microsoft account.

I've tried Dolby Access, DTS, Windows Sonic, and no spatial sound processing on PC for games and highly recommend Dolby Access.

I tested with AKG headphones, EPOS and Drop PC38x. Hands down in FPS Dolby Access was the best experience.
- Better overall sound and experience
- Better positional awareness, especially with FPS (may require custom EQ)
- With no spacial sound, games like COD Warzone would miss sounds or I'd perceive them in the incorrect places, with Atmos I can clearly tell footstep directions

It's for any 5.1 content, so that includes games configured for 5.1 surround, and video apps that support 5.1 Dolby digital

It seems to me that the Xbox Series X/S games use DTS:X if they support spatial surround sound at all. Dolby Atmos is more used for streaming videos, which makes sense since it doesn't require as much bandwidth. DTS is higher bandwidth which isn't a problem for games because they're stored on your Console/PC.

Perhaps you use an older version of Xbox or are using Windows but my XBox Series X/S came with support for Dolby and DTS 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound standards. It's only Dolby and DTS spatial surround sound standards that needs an app download.

Is this true? For a 4K Blu-ray you can get bitstream Atmos and DTS without needing to purchase this on Series X?

14.99 for the Atmos app. 100% worth it imo. Get the trial and you'll hear the difference.
