Some other things to consider with a NAS.

Power Protection: I paired my 920+ with a cyberpower SL 750 VA. I use it only for the NAS and it recognizes it without issues. Estimated run time is 70 mins and it has 12GB of ram and fully populated with 4 TB iron wolves. I have it set to start down safely long before the battery runs low.

backups : if you use this as primary storage for family photos and things you don't want to loose. Then I would look into a cloud back up solution Synology C2, Backblaze B2, or others. At the very least I would set up hyperbackup to an external hard drive via USB. Yes the raid helps to protect against drive failures but if the Nas unit dies or is stolen the back ups will allow to to get your data.

Security: if you access these remotely definitely look up videos on options on how to secure them as best as possible for remote access. There was a recent widespread attack on these if people left default settings in place. Wundertech YouTube channel is a great place to start.

Yes this can run a Plex server, yes it can transcode multiple streams at once. And no, THIS DEAL IS NOT LIVE YET. Read the post please!!

I got this same deal earlier this year and have it set up as my Plex Server. Transcodes 1080p with no issue remotely and Direct Plays everything I have locally, including full untouched 4K rips that are ~80-100 Mbps. So yes, good choice for Plex Server.

In my experience, the power cost delta is minimal across the 2 drive Synology NAS when they are running in steady state. While not exactly the same as J-series vs this deal, I had my newer, larger + unit and my older standard DS unit running side by side while I was slowly moving NAS units and tried having both on meters to figure out the difference and it seemed like after I accounted for the extra drives the power cost was probably a wash between the two. But for clarity, I did not run that deep an analysis of it. It just seems to me that until you are running many RS series NAS like an enterprise, or are running off solar or gen power, that the power differences between smaller DS units probably aren't overly material, and if they are, I would suspect the prime drivers of consumption are the use differences and the age/quality of drives in the unit.
Nice, thanks for the insight

Waiting on the 920+.. but it's gonna be tough sell at this point..
Already got my 8GB RAM stick ready for either model.

I need to replace my soon to be unsupported WD Duo NAS. Would this be a good replacement? Can I drop in my HDDs from my WD into this without losing any data or will they reformat? It's mostly just for picture backups. I've always thought about putting my movie collection on it but my WD duo was so slow and cumbersome I never did. If this is fast enough with a better interface then that is something I would also consider.
Yes. hands down. I come from a WD NAS (white light) -- geez, that's old.. Not that it failed, but this provides redundancy, power and apps.

I bought the DS218+ before the 220+ was released. Now I'm considering a second one, for off-site sync/backup

How is remote management of these devices? I want to set this up at my parents' house but will need complete access to the UI remotely.

Also, is there a way to backup to a remote synology? ideally I'd like to backup theirs to mine (once I set it up) and vice versa.
Easy. Just open DSM port in your router, set up 2FA, DDNS... and you're done.

EDIT: Better yet, just set it up as a VPN Server, and close all ports except 1194 for OpenVPN -- or the one of your choosing, and access DSM from there.

Good lord that's expensive. $600 annually for 8TB.

Backblaze personal on VM accessing shares via iSCSI. $7/month unlimited, after the most recent $1/mo price increase.

Also Amazon Glacier if hot storage is unnecessary.
Also OneDrive, if you have office 365 family subscription you can stack up to 6TB in free cloud storage, and use Cloud Sync to send specific folders to each bucket so it can be distributed. Cheaper than backblaze B2

Off topic Q:

Why not use Plex Shares by "renting" the Plex Service for a monthly fee and they have all the movies and TV shows?

Personal videos and pictures I get for Plex...but why store and keep commercial movies on your own NAS besides speed advantage?
I do both. Plex shares are awesome…but sometimes you can't stream anything higher than 1080p and some of the 4k stuff buffers. Having your own storage with high def/atmos on your own network is great

Seems like the best news on this model is you get all the benefits of the Intel series CPUs (for Plex lovers, for instance) without the risks of earlier C2xxx series CPUs? I think the Intel Celeron J3355 has generally been clear of the complaints that plagued the earlier Atom models?

Good luck!

I too am a current owner of an older 418j which I was lucky enough to outfit before prices got out of hand. I've been waiting some time now to get a unit like this with the intention of using it as my primary and sending the 418j off for backup duties.

Good luck!

You can set up a VPN and login to their NAS that way. Or you can use Synology quick connect. Or you can port forward specific apps to subdomains, and maybe proxy the DNS with cloudflare.

And yes, you can backup to another Synology.

Can anyone help me decide between this and odroid hc4. I want a disk that's online so that my phones are backed up wirelessly. I don't have security cams yet, don't use Plex.

Critical advice. The good news is that Synology hasn't experienced the malware bugs that threaten QNAP devices [zdnet.com], but instead they have gotten to experience brute force attacks (yay?).

Waste no time making the basic changes that should aid with securing this device (if only to disable some of the remote access functionality if you won't be using that on your device).

Good luck!

These are definitely not in the same range for being appropriate for comparison.

If you're looking to have some fun with a DIY project, go for the odroid.

The DS220+ is arguably more NAS than you need for the purposes you've described (no Plex, no security cameras) so you could arguably even find a Synology that's another odroid closer in price (so perhaps only double the price of the odrdoid). That price premium would also reflect the different experience you're going to have with setting up the Synology product.

Some people would be aghast at even the idea of a kit car or a shade tree project, and would rather drive a toaster Camry. Others consider a project car a fun, lifetime opportunity. Consider that when you're looking at the odroid.

Good luck!

Just to add more examples
A system with a Ryzen 3400G pull 6.8W from the wall. [reddit.com]
18W for a i3-10100 system. [reddit.com]
These processors are already way less power efficient than a Celeron J4205 or an ARM processor, and the PC PSU is also way less power efficient than a Synology customized stuff. Still, without HDDs and GPU, the rest of a decent modern PC can pull around or even less than 10W at idle. In fact, some high-end router easily consume > 15W. I had an EA8500 paried with a 18W DC power supply and sometimes the router rebooted due to power limit.

I have a N3150 PC with two HDDs serving like a NAS. (though I only need a 24x7 storage, so no fancy stuff like the Synology services.) This PC + a N3050 soft router + a AX3000 router + one LED lamp + a modem toegther only pull 54W from my UPS.

In short, unless you buy a NAS with a really strong x86 processor and max out its CPU usage all the time, you can pretty much forget about the CPU powr consumption. Your disks will likely eat more power!

Unfortunately you won't be able to just move the drive over with data intact if your WD NAS model had encryption enabled by default, which WD tends to do. Only the WD NAS will be able to read the drive.

What is a good hdd to put in these that won't break the bank? And for plex servers are you doing just 2 separate drives or running a Raid?
Ive been running plex off my pc but thinking about making the switch to this.
