Thanks! That's not a bad idea! I ended up buying the official covers/protectors for them (I think black rapid called them "bucklr" or "fastenr" -- they sold a bunch of these "extra safety" accessories that just raised the price even more!)
I think what bugged me the most is how enough changes were made to each strap series so the corresponding fastenrs were not interchangeable between series due to just enough size difference.

I'm not surprised! I had a bunch of their straps (the original, the double, and a few later models) and really enjoyed them but the prices for the straps and all of the needed addons to make you feel "safe" with it, but ended up slowing you down in the process, I ended up switching to the spider holster pro system.
I still have my black rapids and have no problem using them for certain events, but I don't know if I'd trust my cameras to these 3rd party ones as quickly

I agree. IMO, this product is more geared toward a light / casual user, as the robustness isn't at as high of a level. I'm more a hybrid or double strap fan for the flexibility. Also use self-made safety add-ons like the zip ties, hair ties, or paracord attachments at different lengths.

Question for the folks that have used this or similar products. How securely does the screw stay locked? Just worried about the screw slowly unscrewing itself from the camera from normal body movement.
I've used the BR similar to this on my 7D with 70-200 or 24-105 for years for 6-8 hours at a time and have never had it come loose at all. The hook had a good swivel so there isn't a lot of twisty business thing on.
I have similar strap, i hate that mine has the extra strap to go under armpit so the pad designed for only 1 side of the shoulder i forgot which one but i sometime dont use it , the armpit strap keep it at 1 position al the time, it's good but then when you need to set it down or on tripod , u have to unscrew it , i dont like to unscrew it , lazy i guess. and sometime to hold it on the side is flapping around as i walk rather be in front of your chest, few time the camera hit other obstacles since it has hoods and sticking out.
I normally use a holdfast but I'm grabbing two of these. Nice to have them in the car or my wife's car just in case i forget mine or something. I have a backup in the car.

I have just received this and it is very good material. I don't see any problem to put that on - I tested with my big canon with the 70-200 2.8L lens.... No issue at all.
There are 2 plactic clips and I could not figure out what that are for (the clips shown on the first picture out of 6 on the web site and it is not for adjusting the length. If anyone know what that is, please let me know. I worry those clips would scratch my camera back viewer screen and want to take it off.....
