Isn't buying from Apple store cheaper for the latest mode? Buy $100 Apple gift card from Amazon and get $15 Amazon credit. Then buy from Apple store using GC from Amazon and get $50 Apple gift card. Making the final cost 149-15-50=84? Anyone agrees?

Update: I used Amex 15% off deal and bought $100 Apple gift card from Amazon for $85. Im going to receive $15 Amazon credit too. So final cost is 84-15=$68 for latest HD model. $98 for latest 4K model

No, this is a good deal if you don't care about the remote. I love the old remote but a lot of people didn't like it and the new version of the 4K Apple TV comes with a different one. The new version also has a faster processor but the old one is perfectly fine for watching/steaming TV.

Some counterpoints:
1. $60 more for a processor that is 2 years/2 generations faster (A10X vs A12)
2. Faster processor means it won't be out of support as quickly (obsolescence)
3. Currently iOS 15 is only supported on A9 and higher (only one away from A10)
4. The longer you keep it the better for the environment
5. Less work later on to switch devices

Also if you have an OLED TV - the 2021 model is basically a must have as the older model produces raised blacks

have you used a roku remote? I got the 2021 apple tv, but am kind of worried I wont like the layout or feel of the controller as much as the roku one. I like everything about the roku, EXCEPT lately it's been suddenly going back to the home screen some and also it's so full that it makes me have to reload channels. But I ordered the apple tv anyway. I really hate change is the only thig. lol.

The latest model from Apple direct is 179 for 32gb or 199 for 64gb. The one for 149 is HD, not 4K.

If you have a 4K TV, you will probably want the 4K Apple TV. Also, the 4K version is a good bit faster and plays more video formats than the 1080P version.

For my education - what's the advantage of this over Shield TV for $129 or Chromecast with Google TV ($35-39), other than the ecosystem? Seems to me that the Android TVs offer more flexibility (Kodi, local media) than Apple TV...

What will I be missing from this Apple tv 4k when compared to Fire tv max 4k 2021 edition assuming I purely use it for streaming apps like Netflix, hulu, prime, and a few more channels?

I like Apple products, but Fire or Roku sticks are ~1/4 to ~1/3 of the price, and you can get Apple TV subscription for ~$5/mo. iirc the Apple TV device only comes with 3 months of Apple TV subscription.
