You would need a box for it and an amplifier minimum. You may need either a head unit or an adapter to use it with your OEM unit. Depending on your needs, this method may not be for you. One or two 12s would absolutely slam, but a self contained 8" or maybe 10" setup would still sound great. What kind of vehicle and music you running?

Would this work to swap out a blown woofer on a personus 12" powered sub?

Oooooh i see. so i should purchase two of them? they would be going in an infiniti g35. as for music, everything and anything, definitely lots of bass heavy stuff like edm/hiphop/rap. my only experience with upgrading a cars stock audio was installing a infinity bass link in an old altima i had. tbh i think it sounded pretty damn good, no obnoxious rattling, easy install, small footprint. but i've never tried the traditional amp-speakers in boxes set up. i'm guessing $29.99 isn't going to be the only thing i'm spending to complete this setup?

As long as the power from the personus is not more than the rated watts of the JBL it should work just fine.

JBL is rated 250 watts RMS.

You don't need two of them unless you're going for huge volume. You think of most speakers in pairs for stereo sound, but that's not important with subs. The only reason to get two is for extra volume

Correct. You will need more than this. You will need a sub amp capable of driving this. You will need an enclosure big enough and possibly tuned for this. JBL will have the specs of the box that is required. You will need to wire everything in, etc.

This is most often used in a car. You could use it in a home. Yes, it requires a box. The key is matching the right amp. Most home amps are rated at twice the resistance and would blow this easily. Personally, I have always preferred 10 to 12. 10 takes less airspace (you need to start doing a lot of study on airspace. You starve this for air and you are not going to like the sound.), is more precise than a 12 and delivers plenty of low end. As with everything though, that is a sliding scale and depends on both the quality of sub and entire setup.
10's are not more precise or accurate or whatever you want to call it. 12's are more efficient at lower frequencies so they can tend to sound boomier depending on the configuration and equalization.

I used this in an old 12" MTX home subwoofer and changed the amp w/ a used dayton audio 250w RMS amp. I had to cut a bigger hole for the amp but it sounded amazing.
