Get the HD-58X instead. Much lower impedance and can be driven well by just about anything

Well worth it at $179. I paid $199 around 4 years and still using them with custom ear pads.

I work in the automotive NVH field Sennheiser HD650 is the workhorse. It's well made, good price, and has had consistent response across multiple years of production runs. Yes there are "better" headphones out there, but this one get's you in the door for a good all around performer.

I have powered these off an internal sound card, (shhh don't let the haters know) and it's good enough, I personally use an amp just because it's par for the course when doing professional work.

Note in my application I purposely flatten the headphone response out by applying a filter to linearize the headphone.

I love my Sennheisers and have been waiting to upgrade, but I'd rather buy a pair that don't require an amp. Are these a good choice, or is there another model I should be targeting?

you could look into the HD 560s. Easier to drive, similar sennheiser sound signature with a recessed bass and more intimate mids but from my experience once you start looking at open back headphones eventually you will want to grab a cheap amp or something

What is this magical product you speak of? Can you provide a link. Please let me know! My Sennheiser HD650 earpads are DISGUSTING and I can't get myself to pay $50 for replacements.
Dekoni Elite Valour. They did change the soundstage a little bit probably because zero leak from there and only out the open back. They are holding up well as well with my greasy ass head/hair.

Paid $37.53 via drop at the same time. I also bought an Aune X1S amp/dac but no longer use it since my SoundBlaster card can keep up with the 300ohm this headset requires.

I did not like these. I bought into the hype and was disappointed. Mids are not as sharp I thought... Overall a pretty flat sound profile. The focal elegias are much better
To each their own! I really enjoy the HD-6XX but do prefer the HD-600's more forward mids. The Elegia I had to pass along because I found the treble spikes too harsh

You will need additional equipment for these.
Depends on what you already have... Besides all headphones except maybe some that have a built in radio need additional equipment to play music.

I have a Sound Blaster Z which can be picked up for around $50 used. It has a decent DAC and amp. I plan on using it with that until I get the Hersey and Modi stack.

Thanks for reminding me why I don't own these. The earpads smush over time altering the sound and necessitating buying new ones. Saved me $180 bucks! Applause

The audiophile world probably has the most myths and misinformation circulating around the community that clueless people believe are true. No you do not need an amp or 'extra equipment'.

That's actually the exact sound card I'm currently using with these HD6XX's. They work great. Just turn off all that SBX Pro Studio crap and use this EQ [github.com].

I'm not convinced spending $200+ on a schiit stack would be a worthwhile upgrade over this sound card.

Thanks for the EQ settings! Definitely turn off the SBX function since they made my Q701s sound terrible. However, the Atmos plugin works much better for music if you want spatial.

With the SBZ I don't feel the need to upgrade since they drive well but like I found the wormhole and I am already planning future upgrade path.

I own these along with an Audeze LCD 2C and HiFiMan Sundaras. They work great and are very comfy with large oval ear pads. Flat tuning with a slight treble roll off that adds a tiny bit of warmth but overall flat to my ears. Used with. Schiit Magni 3+, iFi Zen DAC v2, an old Marantz 2235 and an onkyo Tx-NR808 and they all power these well. I've also used them with a dragonfly red off an iPhone and gotta say while slightly less dynamics they still sound really really good. Easier to power than you'd think.
