Get the HD-58X instead. Much lower impedance and can be driven well by just about anything

Well worth it at $179. I paid $199 around 4 years and still using them with custom ear pads.

I forgot how much i paid, but i bought my hd650 in 2008 and they are STILL going strong, replaced the earpads once so far, with Dekoni's or whatever that brand is, got them for a good deal on drop. Pads touch your oily skin and hair, and lose their form. I wish they did charge less for the pads though. Anyways, great headphones for the price, just be sure you have an amp, OR maybe your receiver can power these, my last three receivers could power these nicely. My onboard pc headphone jack, not so much. I got a creative g6 amp/dac which a refurb might be on sale at creative
You need to pad swap badly. Worn pads change the sound dramatically.

I did, to the new dekonis, may have changed the sound but I don't care, they are high quality and seems like they would last a long time

i know its sorta obvious but neither 58x or 6xx are wireless or bluetooth or have anc laugh out loud but in terms of acoustic performance, yes they will be a significant upgrade although note that both of them are open back which means they leak sound. I would pick the 58x for a better all around performer.

their cables are trash, but Massdrop will replace the whole thing instead of just replacing the cable. I just received my 4th replacement.
Sounds like you're doing something wrong at that point... Never heard of the cables being bad.

I have a pair of HD-58x that I haven't used much, mainly due to comfort. I have a big head...can anyone comment on whether these are likely to be more comfortable for me? I knew when I bought them after reading reviews on here that they may not work with my head. I attempted to "stretch" the band by putting them over a larger item for a couple days, unfortunately it didn't help.

I have a dragonfly red, am I likely to notice a considerable improvement in sound over the 58x? The 58x were my first set of headphones. Great sound, but I must admit they didn't blow me away.

Thanks for any input!

Very similar headphones in build. HD58X is a less analytic and more "fun" listen to the 6XX according to those that have both. (A tad bit more bass on the 58x).

I can sleep in my HD-58X cans. Super comfortable imo, sooooooo much better than any in-ears that I have grown to despise.

I guess. This leaves out a lot of important info for a based suggestion.

Get the 58x if....
1. You do not have an amp
2. You have an amp but you prefer a more mid/midbass centric sound (they're veiled, but some people seem to like it)
It will still need an amp to truly shine, imo.

Get the 6xx if....
1. You have an amp
2. You are looking for a reference sound, and you like the feel of what Sennheiser has on offer.
3. You prefer a brighter tonality (they are a LOT brighter... but they also have way better bass extension too, if you have hardware that can push them)

At this price the 6xx is sort of a no brainer as long as you like the look and feel of these cans. They're decent for watching movies, great for most music, pretty good for gaming.
(They have that 3 blob issue that most sennheisers have, but it's not as noticeable. Imaging is very accurate on them most of the time (verticality is non existent to my ear)

Honestly though... if you don't have an amp and you're just looking for some good headphones you can drive off of anything, try out some Koss's. I've been breaking in a pair of KPH40 U's for a week now and I would rec them over shp9500's at this point.

Is the fit the same between the two? As I said, for my big head, the 58x get uncomfortable very quickly.

I love my Sennheisers and have been waiting to upgrade, but I'd rather buy a pair that don't require an amp. Are these a good choice, or is there another model I should be targeting?

I believe they are the same. I see people bend the metal band to get a better fit if they have big noggins.

What is a good headphone for watching movies? I might get these, but I want one more dedicated for movies and music as a side.
