All of this is a rehash of the OP, but I'll paraphrase for you:

it's all about personal preference. The other one is a 'laptop' chromebook. Most importantly it has a better processor. It has a larger SSD by 2x. That's the better one for my use case.

But, if someone wants the flexibility of a convertible / 2-in-1 to use it as a tablet / tent setup to watch movies, etc... Then this one would be great. Plus this one has Gorilla Glass. That's a huge plus.

Both are great units, but I personally would prefer the Costco setup for how I use Chromebooks in my lineup - a quick surfing device that sits near the couch/kitchen.

Should I bite on this at $314 open box excellent. My daughter has a 2 in 1 chrome book but it's slow now 11.3" bd ips 4gb ram and 32gb emmc. This one is much much faster by the looks of it
You can always buy it and return it by Jan 16 if it doesn't work out. Looks like the Open Box Certified near me is gone.

But yes, 8GB is much faster than 4GB. Plus the switch to eMMC to SSD will help too. I'm also assuming yours has a Celeron / Mediatek processor vs this Intel i3.

The other ones in this ~$300-$350 price range I've seen are the Lenovo Flex 5i coming Monday @ Costco for $349 (w 4 year Costco credit card warranty) and the refurbished 2020 Spin 713 from Acer for ~$361 (w 90 day warranty plus whatever your credit card gives you).

You can even open it and use it, and as long as it's in the same condition you can return it in the return window. I love best buy open box. Usually great quality with full OEM warranty, but have had a few that weren't good. Easy returns for bad quality or even some other reason (one was that "speakers weren't strong enough" for example).
is there a big difference in something like this open box Excellent vs. Excellent Certified? Just ordered the Excellent as it was only one available, now Certified shows up. Would Geek Squad actually look at one and decide to pass it as excellent because it wasn't up to certified? Or is excellent just ones they didn't have time to look at? Will do my own battery integrity test when I get it. Other than that, if they are both supposed to "look brand new" then I don't see what cleaning it for Certified makes much difference?

Which do you go with? Keep in mind neither is local to inspect first, all shipping. . .

I always go with regular Excellent, or sometimes even lower. The Certified may save a small issue, like one I got recently that was kinda gunky, but it's all easily returned to any Best Buy store. I know of 2 of the nearby stores often label them as lower but they are often immaculate (admitted not always). One store manager told me they did that intentionally in appliances to move them more; not sure if that's true but we bought a dryer that way too.

As for Excellent versus Certified, I'm in the camp as always "just" Excellent.

Thinking about this more, I almost got one too, to try this model, but looks like only Certified remains. Still an good deal, but not quite the same deal IMHO (I know, it's only $20, but SD blood here). Otherwise, I don't think this is a great deal New with the similar Costco deal (even not having Costco myself).

I bit on this and bought the open box excellent. Should be here on Tuesday.

I'll inspect it when it arrives, but I think it will be a great Christmas gift for my dad who really only needs a Chromebook to sit on the couch and surf, email, etc.

Someone earlier mentioned a battery stress test.... can you give me some info on that and how to do it? Thanks!

** Edit **

Looks like all of the open box options are gone now....

Bay Area has a few "Satisfactory" condition for $291 + tax. I couldn't say no at that price, especially when it can be easily returned through mid-January as mentioned by others. Other thoughts:
  • I just picked it up, and the notes for the open box read "Minor scratches". I opened it up and it's a total joke -- this this looks absolutely brand new. Feels like the staff at this Best Buy were maybe overly cautious. And Chrome OS handles factory resets exceptionally well so I feel like I picked up a brand new machine. Really great deal for me but YMMV.
  • 11th gen processors are said to be absolutely incredible, and 11th gen i3 chips are supposed to absolutely incredible on Chrome OS (better than 10th gen i7). From what I've seen the upgrade from 11th gen i3 to i5 might not be significant and not worth spending significantly more (like the Costco deal mentioned above).
  • 8GB of RAM makes a huge difference in performance over 4GB. This laptop with 8GB and 11th gen i3 is going to absolutely fly.
  • I'm so excited for a fingerprint reader -- have been wanting one for a long time and is the primary reason (along with a major speaker upgrade) I'm going to see if this is good enough to replace my otherwise beloved refurbished Acer 713 with its brilliant 3:2 screen (which is currently on sale at an absolutely insane $361)
  • Screen is supposed to be pretty average -- just 250 nits is pretty dark. Keyboard and trackpad are supposed to be quite good, and speakers are said to be solid.
  • End of life / Auto Update Expiration (AUE) is listed as June 2028 on this [google.com] Google Help Center article, but that is for the 2020 version. Going to settings on the laptop itself, the OS reads "This device will get automatic software and security updates until June 2029. "

Summary: I wouldn't buy at $450, but anything under $325 is a steal for the hardware. Thanks for posting!

Stock seemed flickering on Open Box - Excellent Certified, but was able to snag one today! I've been looking at chromebook deals and while I wouldn't buy it at sales price $450, I think open box best buy deals are always insane value

EDIT: Damn seemed to be an error cause they just cancelled the order Frown

The refurbished Acer Spin 713 for $361 seems like a better deal.

The HP Chromebook is a little newer. Does it have other things going for it?

Yeah I was going to say...this price puts it pretty close to Acer Spin 713 territory, which by most accounts is a better machine. Take a look at some YouTube reviews before buying imo.

A word of warning for this one: mine has a trackpad "drift", not sure how else to describe it. When you move you finger and then stop, the pointer still moves a tiny bit. I even sent it in for repair, didn't change a thing. Drives me nuts. Make sure to test yours when you get it.

Just got one of these certified open box for my daughter for Xmas. I originally bought an acer chromebook spin for $150 at Walmart that I'm returning. Figure it will be worth it to shell out the extra $200 for a much better machine

Chromebooks do have issues with trackpads. I have personally had drifting, lag and lazy pointers with some of the premium ones too.
