Google "MSI GP66 repaste" and "MSI GP66 overheating". Do you really want to deal with repasting it every few years? Undervolt?

Could you recommend a laptop deal for my son heading off to (business) college. Something all around for entertainment, school, light gaming etc.

From what you described it needs to be a modern, slick lightweight ultra book with good battery life.

I think the LG Gram currently discounted as part of Amazon Black Friday deal fits the description. This is the current high end iteration of the well respected LG Gram line with a large memory (32 GB) and large flash storage (1TB SSD)

https://smile.amazon.com/LG-Gram-...B09421SSXJ

I know most people would recommend a 17 inch LG Gram but I personally find 17 inch a bit too big to carry around and 15 inch is the best size balancing portability and bulkiness. Only a little over two lbs yet with a super long battery life (almost 20 hours). Lightning fast with all the modern features including fingerprint reader and two thunderbolt 4 ports that a lot of high end gaming laptops lack. Thunderbolt allows you to connect it to a high resolution display with high data transfer speed. Modern and professional looking design. Excellent build quality and excellent screen. Shock, dust, etc. resistant. It is aimed for business/designer people on the go.

The downside is you are paying a bit of premium for the brand and build quality. Also as this is not a gaming laptop and it has the intel iris xe graphics chips, it can only do light gaming, though with the thunderbolt ports I believe you can get an external GPU enclosure and hook it up with a gaming video card to play graphically intensive games this way. Of course this is not the old intel integrated graphics anymore. It can still play most of the AAA titles on the market, though the frame rate might be a bit low and you need to turn down graphics quality in game to 1080p. I think it is an acceptable tradeoff as real gaming laptops tend to be bulkier and heavier, with very bad battery life. This laptop can't do VR unfortunately.

If this one is a bit expensive, Costco has a 2-in-1 variant with smaller memory and storage for a bit cheaper. It is also a little bit heavier. However as it is a 2-in-1 you can flip it around and use it for hand-writing notes taking in class.

Repasting every few years is an oxymoron. Laptops won't last five years. Don't need to repaste if you plan to replace in 5 years
