Stuck in S mode after switching to 10 home? I was under the impression the change is permanent but this review states otherwise:

"worst purchase I have made. I had really high hopes. Laptop comes with windows 10 S Mode witch limits you unless you switch out. I switched Out and then my computer had an upgrade and the laptop went back to S mode and now won't let me out. I have had it less than 24 hours."

Unfortunately, not everyone is educated on how to switch to normal from S mode.
Thank you for the response. Planning to get this as a gift but more than a bit concerned. I will switch out of S mode myself before wrapping it up, but I have never performed the switch before. Are these instructions correct?

"On your PC running Windows 10 in S mode, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.

In the Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro section, select Go to the Store. (If you also see an "Upgrade your edition of Windows" section, be careful not to click the "Go to the Store" link that appears there.)

On the Switch out of S mode (or similar) page that appears in the Microsoft Store, select the Get button. After you see a confirmation message on the page, you'll be able to install apps from outside of the Microsoft Store."

Above is from "https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/switching-out-of-s-mode-in-windows" followed by a long code.

After switching out of S mode to Windows 10 home, is there any way it can then switch back itself after an update and then be stuck in S mode permanently? I am concerned because of the review stating "the laptop went back to S mode and now won't let me out." In addition, a search returned: "Stuck in S Mode - no option to change it - 'get' button is greyed out. HELP PLEASE...!."

Any help would from anyone familiar would be appreciated.

I'm just waiting for someone to complain about 250nit screen, low ram / ssd space and no backlit keyboard, lol.

This is a great deal for a budget laptop. Another 4gb stick of ram is $19.99 on Amazon. Great little laptop to have around the house.

Edit: Link for ram (since ppl are asking) - Samsung 4GB DDR4 3200MHz PC4-25600 1.2V 1R x 16 SODIMM Laptop RAM Memory Module M471A5244CB0 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B091DT3...8BDFX3563J
What about adding one 8GB stick?

Good price if you're looking for a step up from a chromebook, but there's not much you can do with this laptop other than youtube, internet browsing, and typing up documents.

I honestly don't know but you can check the specs here https://slickdeals.net/f/15423649-hp-15-6-touchscreen-laptop-amd-ryzen-3-processor-4gb-ram-memory-25... I just added the deal since I didn't see anyone posting that one.

Only bluetooth 4.2 and no backlit kb
The built-in card actually supports BT 5.0. The thing is, the differences between BT 4.2 and BT 5.x are firmware-level differences. And for BT cards, the firmware is not permanently stored on the card, but is actually loaded into the card during boot by the driver when the OS loads the driver. And so when the driver gets updated, the firmware gets updated too. (WiFi cards do the same thing, and if you look at Intel's WiFi drivers, the big .dat files are the firmware blobs).

For example, Intel's AX200 card originally launched with BT 5.0. But the Intel spec page has slowly revised it, and now it says BT 5.2. And if you load the latest driver, you'll get BT 5.2, even though the actual hardware was never updated.

Realtek does the same thing. This card was originally designed as BT 4.2 and the "friendly name" shown the Device Manager even still says BT 4.2. But if you examine the card's details in device manager, you'll see that its HCI and LMP versions are 9.x, which is BT 5.0.

In any case, the laptop does support CNVi, so I went ahead and replaced it with an AX201 anyway because Intel is better and I wanted WiFi 6. But the reality is that the BT version of the stock Realtek card is actually 5.0, despite what the spec sheet says.

Upgrade the RAM and the SSD and you can do plenty.

The i3 CPU in this laptop is almost twice as fast as the i7-8565U in my Dell XPS 13. I can assure you I'm doing much more than youtube and browsing on my XPS.

I just read through Q&A on Target website that you can upgrade up to 16gb ram on the other HP laptop.

Q: Hi there, can the RAM on this HP laptop (15-ef1041nr) be upgraded to a higher amount, such as 8GB or 16GB?
submitted by oliviajo6 — 7 months ago
A: Hello! Thank you for your question. You are able to upgrade the ram for this model to a maximum of 16GB. It is currently using 4 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM.

Prolly deal of the yr for a budget laptop
HP specs sheet https://support.hp.com/us-en/prod.../c07224657

says has DDR4 2666 RAM and SATA3 SSD, 250 nits 45% NTSC screen
Realtek RTL8821CE-M 802.11a/b/g/n/ac (1x1) Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® 4.2 combo
The spec sheet is wrong.

The RAM is actually 3200. The same thing happened with the Wal-Mart version of this laptop: spec sheet said 2666, the actual stick was 3200. This is not surprising, since I don't think 2666 sticks are even being made these days.

The WiFi card, though, is surprising. But I have this laptop, which I've already opened up and dissected and upgraded. And the card is definitely a 8822, not 8821, and it's a 2x2 card with 2 antenna lines connected (the Wal-Mart version is a 8821 with just a single antenna line).

In any case, spec sheets don't always match the actual hardware. And in the case of the laptop that I have in my possession, the RAM and WiFi cards are both in reality better speced than what is listed on the sheet.

What a weird set of specs. Why not just ship the laptop without the drive and include a screwdriver kit.

It is a very good deal for what you get.
