Sufficient for the most basic of functions. Thumbs up because it is only $160. Not everyone has $300 or needs something for more than checking their email or watching Netflix....though no doubt the screen will not be the best for watching Netflix based on the price point but not really a knock.

If it's really only web-browsing you need to do, get a Chromebook. BB is selling some excellent HP Chromebooks for $99 each.

I did, and I am very happy with my Chromebook.

RAM upgradeable to 8GB max (according to ASUS product page). Hardware service manual shows it has an M.2 slot for an SSD.

Can you open the back of the laptop, and see if it can add more ram and SSD?

Weird to see a mixed review on this otherwise spot-on post. For $160 the ASUS in this deal is not broken, and is almost an amazing testament to how much computing power has been democratized. To a pro with the right use case, this laptop could be a great little bargain.

However, although a Chromebook with these specifications would be killer, Windows 10/11 remains a poor fit for the CPU and RAM on offer here. This will function, but as delivered is going to demand some patience from the end-user. For anyone shopping for a Windows PC under $300 the competitive options created by Chomebooks at that same sub-$300 price point really does demand the question "are you sure you need a Windows PC?"

Good luck!

While this echoes what everyone says on here, I have an old Acer aspire one Celeron with 4gb and just bought the Lenovo mediatek arm Chromebook 14" from best buy. The windows machine is faster in literally everything.

I am a Linux fanboy but all this hate on windows performance is just FUD as far as I'm concerned. Not to mention, the arm Chromebook native apps are falling short for me, yes you can run Android but then you have no native video acceleration.

I might have to buy this Asus and consider returning the Chromebook.

Wow, FullHD display (1920x1200) for $159? I mean, there are $2500 laptops from major manufacturers that are sold with this resolution...

Resolution specs on paper tells only half the story. Most reviews state that his display is washed out with poor viewing angles.

First, kudos on keeping that Acer going this long!

To be fair to that poor Lenovo, I assume you realize that you bought the weakest CPU option available in the Chromebook space? That Lenovo isn't broken, but the fairer comparison would be another Atom-equipped Chromebook. The Lenovo you bought rang in for $150 in large part because of some features that are premium in the Chromebook space (such as the 14" screen), otherwise there are reasons this CPU dominates the sub-$150 Chromebook space.

I think the biggest problem becomes the sweeping use case statements like this is for the kids or this is for my grandma which discounts some of the underlying problems associated with low-power Atom systems running Windows. Some of your own experience with your Acer One may be helpful here. Is this your daily driver? Light browsing only? These could be helpful data points to avoid generalized FUD.

Overall, considering some of the amazing systems that are ringing in at $340 and less as of late (which could, like your old Acer, potentially have a good long useful life) there's no reason to accept anything less than a solid minimum bar of a Windows experience.

Amazon and YT reviews report that RAM is soldered and cannot be upgraded. Tjey also report there is a open slot to add an SSD.
