Good for old fashioned not so great neat. Old forester rye or michters rye is normally this price and much better imo.

Depending on what state you are in, you may be able to get the deal without a membership. There are several states where it's illegal to require membership for the sale of alcohol.

Exactly! All Whistlepigs are overpriced for the quality! It should be this price everywhere.

Pretty much every review I've seen on WhistlePig describes it as an expensive cheap liquor. Nothing special, but priced as if it is. At this price though, it's probably a good buy.

Not in San Diego. Our Sam's Club has the lamest selection of "good stuff". Whoever is in charge of liquor ordering hasn't a clue about liquor.

I actually did a web search for the whiskey and found that it was specifically made for cocktails-- so this is for Manhattans or Old Fashions.

Costco has deals like this all the time, including on rare items. As long as you're not in an ABC / liquor controlled state. Just visit your biggest Costco(s) routinely and you'll be pleased. Or follow r/whiskey, r/bourbon, and r/scotch. If someone posts something from costco, ask the item # and call your local store to check regional stock.
edit: and you don't have to be a member to buy alcohol, and no surcharge. at least in California.

Have over 180 bottles of whisky, so decent understanding of some of the nuances.

Whistlepig sources their whisky primarily from Canada - Alberta premium. If you want a good, flavorful rye try to find an Alberta premium cask strength or a knob creek cask strength (potentially one of their 115 proof store pick. If you want somethinf in a $30 price point - you can stick with a Sazerac Rye thats great neat or in cocktails.. find a store pick and it'll definitely be worth the value.
