Any thoughts on the gdi21 as it compares to the Joyo American, Brit and California pedals and the Tech 21 NYC sansamp pedals that I think the behringer/Joyo pedals are based upon?

Thanks OP. Picked up the super fuzz. I don't need it really but i always wanted to try it. Tough to beat $20 shipped.

On the last behringer deal I bought a cheap mixer, mic, input boxes as a startup to figure it all out.

As far as behringer guitar pedals, I just watched a bunch of youtube videos comparing these behringer guitar pedals to their original boss versions. Boss pedals all sounded better. And this day and age I'm sure you could find more awesome sounding pedals than the bosses. Sales and used are plentiful.

I'd buy a cheap box if it were fun to play. These Behring don't sound good enough. The sound that comes out of your guitar is what shapes how you to play. IMO, a guitar player is better off listening to a lot of boxes and just buying the ones they love at full price, on sale or used.

Most of the time being frugal is going low price, some of the time being frugal means paying more than most people, or getting used.
