15.2 works with iPhone 6S and above. They cost about $100 used.
Obviously tracking people is not something Apple is interested at all, stalking or not. Apple even is willing to make thief aware and compromise the primary advertised purpose of airtag to achieve that objective.
I'm not buying anymore airtags until Apple shows the sign of getting smarter at the airtag.
I use it for app subscriptions like Carrot or Hushed.
I have an iphone 7 still runs on ios 12.. last week it prompt to upgrade to 15 so intrusive that the message box refuse to go away no matter what I do. I ended up reboot the phone to kill the prompt, still it may come back anytime. The prompt has two options, upgrade now or later. Guess what, both will result in upgrading irreversibly. Only difference is now or 8 hours later when you go to sleep.
If a thief is dumb enough to upgrade an iphone 6 to ios 15, then I bet you won't have to worry about this thief understand what airtag is and does.

Plus, I was referring to your comment about using $1000+ phone to track AirTag. Hence my post that you do NOT need that. An iPhone 6S and above is good enough to run 15.2.
