I'm just over that weight in my 30's. I find 50lb dumbells to be pretty useful. Yes I can max out my bench press with them fairly easily, but not overhead press or curls. I'm obviously not buff, but I like them nonetheless.

I'm in the market for new dumbells and trying to decide between something like a Powerblock or a more traditional dumbell like a Loyo or Snode.

I feel like powerblocks would be really awkward for certain workouts. But never tried them so who knows.

I think I just talked myself out of Snode and into Nuobell or Core due to the notch at the end of the Snode.
To stand up from the bench I lean the end of the dumbell on my thighs so that notch would suck.

Looks like the Core Home Fitness set is on sale for $350 right now too. Nuobell worth $150 more?

Here are my recommendations: I had these and yes, they're pretty good. They have their pros and their cons. Others are correct that these are awkward with some exercises. My biggest issue with them, the reason I ended up returning them for the more traditional dumbbells, is this: The mechanism to switch the weights is a thin plastic "U" shaped thing that you slide between the weighted bars. I found it to be very flimsy, and it would frequently misalign, causing it to not pick up the weights correctly. This is in part because I had them on the floor, not on the dedicated dumbbell stand. But I'm 6'4'', and the would only bring it to slightly above my knees anyway. So I had to get my eyes level with the dumbbells in order to ensure proper alignment. If you're not going to be constantly changing the weights during a workout, it's probably not much of an issue. But I hated it. TLDR; these are a pain in the buns to use when it comes to changing the weights.

Bought these for 239 years back off a SD alert. They were great during lockdown. Bars never got in the way of my wrists. 50lb limit is the only downside. Sometimes the plastic selector misaligns but not a big deal

These are great, picked it up on the last Woot deal. Pretty easy to switched between weights and being able to use the internal 2.5lb steel weights individually are pretty sweet as well.

Sturdy build the only piece that's plastic is the white housing and the clip but still feels pretty solid. The weights don't move around when I'm using them when the clip is in.

The opening can feel a bit cramped though if you have big hands which took some getting used.

Would recommend for a home setup. Will be looking for the additional expandable weights in the future

I would recommend skipping these and going for an expandable version for most people looking to have these as your only weight set and/or want to do at least semi-serious lifting at home. 50lbs is very limiting and you'll easily hit that barrier within 6-12 months for most compounds even leaning towards high reps work. With stuff like legs you could get there much sooner.

Otherwise I highly recommend powerblocks in general. I've been very happy with mine. The design does make it so you can't do some exercises like goblet squats but the list in general is small and there are plenty of alternatives. The bars on the side are also a bit weird at first but I got used to them and they don't bother me. YMMV there. I do not have any problems with changing the weight. Yes sometimes you miss the correct gap but generally they slide in very easily if you aim for the colors.The mechanism to change weight is plastic but for this application that's fine. Powerblocks are known to be long lasting so I doubt it'll fail on you.

yep pro exp all the way! if. You're going to get a full set of 90lb dumbbells for $600+, do it the right away and don't cheap out.

the pro exp is obviously expandable to 90lbs,has the rubber soft coating, weights don't clatter when in use, can take more abuse than the steel powerblocks and much more than the baby boy plastic bowflex. the flat sides are great when resting the weights on your thighs. that in itself is worth it over the bowflex.

the pro exp also has the open hand design where the bars don't get in the way. win win win.
