Well, this is a case of a normally high-end brand that makes their carbon fiber stuff in Italy going for the lower-end consumer market by making an aluminum one from China.

That said - China (currently) makes almost everything and the build quality can be very high (Apple) because of the requirements. Other phones are manufactured in the same plants, but it costs more, so those are your better phones.

On a sub-$100 aluminum tripod? I'd say that the name brand from the brand's store it's a solid buy.

From the details, it actually fits Arca Swiss plates, which all of my stuff was switched to a long time ago, so I'd call it a win.

Is it an 055 pro? No; it's not meant to be.
Okay,..is that bad? Serious question.

Do you have the the same one? Does the small tripod (this one on sale) also convert into a monopod? Or is this only a feature in the large one?

It does not transform into a stand alone monopod.

Knowing exactly nothing about optical hobbies, would this plus the Celestron binocs be a good first "telescope" for a budding suburban astronomer?

The binoculars have great reviews for quality and ease of use but a tripod is recommended. Don't know if the tripod needs particular features, or if even a $30 unit can do it.

Only for budding urban astronomers

For whatever reason, I don't have that issue. I find them as fast or faster to adjust...

Can anyone attest to the actual portability? For a carry-on bag would I be better off with a GorillaPod?

only you can answer that - very different tripods (height for starters). depends upon your use and needs.

The skymaster binoculars are heavy enough that I recommend a sturdier tripod.

Btw, you might need to collimate those binoculars. Its straightforward (check youtube / the interwebs for DIYs) so don't let that deter you. They're good value for the money.

I have a tripod built the same as this one. The bottoms legs fold up around the center column so that it is ~12" tall. I think this one is closer to 1.5 ft folded up. I can tighten one of the nuts on a leg so that it's hard to move and then can strap it down on the outside of my camera bag. It screams "camera guy" but it maximizes my carrying capability on the small bag and TSA ignores it as they just seem to care about what's on the inside of the bag.

I shared product info, which was important for me. It's up to sd community to decide if that info is good or bad for them.

I prefer Manfrotto tripods made 20-30 years ago in Italy. They are usually heavy, rock solid and might be available on craigslist, offerup, etc.

I like the word "prefer". I assume you know when "made in italy" shown in the tag today you usually need to pay 3-5 times the cost.

Many ppl like you don't care about that cost, of course. But I think most of them would just go to some high end/luxury stores and pick up the most premium ones instead of going to SD, find a sweet deal with much lower price but solid made in China from well known brand.

It depends on use case. In urban area you might be able able to place/cling gorillapod onto something. But not so much on beach/lake/field/etc for optimal angle.

Personally I factored in the tripod collapsed size, weight, max extended height, and max load for the comparison. Monopod conversion is a plus but usually that is for larger tripods. This tripod checked most of the boxes for me for being compact (12.6" collapsed) and easily stowed in backpack if I don't want the additional attention screaming I'm a tourist 🙃

At that price tag, I doubt you can find anything better than made in china.

If there is one, capitalisms will move the whole manufacture line there before you even notice.

I have owned this for 2 years and am very happy with the size. It's <13" when collapsed, small enough to fit in a backpack or in the side-water bottle-pocket of some backpacks. I love the hook which can be used to weight it down in windy situations and give some peace of mind. (I used it at the top of some hikes in Hawaii) Overall I wish I had gotten it sooner.

Actually, the main benefit of twist locks is that they are faster to use than flips. There's a technique to them where you can unlock and lock all of the sections with one hand twist - key thing is to make sure you leave the locks just barely untightened and leave enough space for all of the locks to tighten when closing.
