I have the regular book and it's beautiful. Reviews of the special edition have kept me away. The extras apparently are disappointing. Imo, buy the regular edition and a nice poster instead.

EDIT: Not only is the regular edition on sale now, but it's also part of the 3-for-2 promo.

The reviews are definitely mixed, but they're also when it was 70+ so I was going to risk it at 40. Now that the standard version is part of the 3:2 I couldn't resist cancelling and going regular myself🤣

I mean, for just a little over $40? It's a no brainer if you're a lifelong D&D player. At that price point I'll "risk" the special edition instead of the standard one for about $25.

It's an art and history book. They walk through how some of the monsters have developed over time, or the different art styles as new artists were brought in. It's really a great meta book about D&D. Lends depth to the game, even if it's not a game book.
