I have Alltrails Pro and the app is constantly pinging Facebook via graph.facebook.com and other trackers when launched and while in use. Since it requires GPS access, AllTrails is going to pass this information along also. I don't launch this app despite having Pro since it refuses to function when certain trackers are blocked.

I would recommend Hiking Project [hikingproject.com] (backed by REI) which is Free and feature rich.

This was a life saver (maybe literally) in national parks last year where there was no cell coverage. With Apple Watch it would alert you if you were headed off trail.

I was considering buying this a few months back, then found that my public library offers free pro memberships through their website. I'm in CO. No idea if typical, might be worth a check.

not very easy to renew an existing subscription. mine expires in a few days but i don't see a way to purchase for next year at this price.

This app has gotten worse over the years. I've run into issues with maps not showing up, navigation not starting, and now, you can only search a 20 mile radius from your current location to search for hikes on their map. If you do decide to get this, downgrade to version 13.5.0 from a source like APKmirror. At least you'll get to search for more trails.

Very interesting, thank you for this info. I wonder why it pings facebook...

I have this app, I got pro version after i got lost locating a trail in no cellular zone. Now i download trails a head of time with some maps and not worried about getting lost. I dont think i had any major issues with using the app while with only GPS and or data. It makes hiking trailing discover easier and safer as you can see if you are going in the right direction especially if there many cross-trails. worth $15 for a year if you hike often enough in remote locations

almost all apps do this -- they harvest data for advertising (or to serve you ads). Facebook (like other data aggregators who also have embedded SDKs) gathers all the information possible about you to build a rich profile about your activities, wants, interests etc. across both iOS and Android, even if you don't have a Facebook account, or FB on your phone.

Saved our asses A few times in the backcountry when the trail was washed out. Best $ spent, sadly we just renewed our sub. Every hike will feel a little longer knowing I didn't get in on this deal.
