I have Alltrails Pro and the app is constantly pinging Facebook via graph.facebook.com and other trackers when launched and while in use. Since it requires GPS access, AllTrails is going to pass this information along also. I don't launch this app despite having Pro since it refuses to function when certain trackers are blocked.

I would recommend Hiking Project [hikingproject.com] (backed by REI) which is Free and feature rich.

This was a life saver (maybe literally) in national parks last year where there was no cell coverage. With Apple Watch it would alert you if you were headed off trail.

I was considering buying this a few months back, then found that my public library offers free pro memberships through their website. I'm in CO. No idea if typical, might be worth a check.

What library system are y'all on in Colorado that offers this? I don't think mine does but I'm trying to find out.

What is the app you used to detect this?
Adguard Pro [apple.com] on iOS // Netguard [github.com]on Android (google play)
[google.com]

they are the first apps I install on any new device, before I install any Apps.

Thank you for the information. I will look into using it for the future and recommend my daughters check it out for future hikes. They are hiking this holiday weekend.

For others who are looking for free options I used a free Alltrails account for day hiking Zion and Bryce national parks in January over about 10 days. I downloaded all planned hiking routes for free from Alltrails onto my Garmin 945 before going out for hikes. I used the free National Park app on my phone that includes GPS tracking on a map. One could download PDF maps from the national park's website onto their phones. Most trails were very easy to follow without a map for most of the trail. We mostly used maps to just see how far along the trail we were at times and estimate when we would complete the trail.

This or Hiking Project which is free? Have heard lot of good reviews and looks like many have moved from AllTrails to Hiking Project.
I can't speak for AllTrails, but I do really like Hiking Project. You download a specific region, so it's easy to change your plans to explore another trail you may come across.

In some of my searches, I did see that AllTrails may have a couple trails that I could not find in Hiking Project, but not enough to make me think that paying was worth it.

(Don't mean to TC, just answering a question)

Great app, the ability to download useable maps for offline use while out on a trail is worth the price of admission.

I can download Google maps for offline use that are as useful for me as Alltrails maps.

All browsers, at least all the major ones, have a developer tools that work and look very much alike. How to find the developer tools depends on the browser, except they seem to all support use of F12. Just press F12. You will get access to very much technical data, much of it highly technical. You will see a Network tab. I am not sure how to use it but one thing that works for me is to refresh the page. That will cause much stuff to appear. It will be intimidating. It can be massive for some sites. Further details are beyond the scope of this thread, so search the internet for articles about browser's developer's tools.

Have you ever clicked a link and the page comes up bam! instantaneously? That page does little or no communication with other sites, as described here. Some sites take a long time, often because they are doing things like sharing your data.

Semi on topic. For trail that doesn't say bikes, but clearly look like a bike trail, how does one confirm this or update it? I wish there's more social aspect to the trails via the app

That reminds me. Yes, that is a problem; there is no way to communicate with another member.

As for checking on something as you say, it would help to know if the property is federal, state, local or private but as far as I remember Alltrails does not help with that. It would help to know who is responsible for the property, correct? And Alltrails does not help with that, correct? Well of course doing a property search for private property is probably asking too much but they could at least have a database of federal, state and local properties open to the public.

see my sig for browser extensions. You need to configure the Applications to set it up, just installing them won't do anything (including the uBlock / uMatrix extension).

As an update, after reinstalling the HikingTrails App on new phone, it appears they too have calls out to facebook -- but it still does not stop working if all the trackers and adware is blocked (like Alltrails).

HikingTrails supports offline Maps and a cool elevation feature -- it was great for the 2 months I spent wandering the mountains of CO. Alltrails has more "reviews" though, if you're looking to gather info on potential trails.
