Such a bummer these all tend to be 2004 USB speeds. 480Mbps just ain't it for me. Seems like a waste and I hate having to figure out which cords can do what when they're in my bag etc

Sorry if this is a stupid question - but isn't wattage determined by the charger, not the cable? I have a 100W monoprice wall charger but never got a 100W cable for it. Does that mean that regular cables won't charge 100W?

Wattage is determined by the slowest level between charger, cable, and device.

A power supply needs a compatible cable to be able to deliver those speeds. Just because you buy a 100w power supply, doesn't mean it will charge your phone at 100w. Between the power supply, cable, and your phone, it will only charge as fast as the least common denominator.

Do wish cable makers would get certified. PD certified 100W cables have the USB SS logo wrapped in a battery icon.

It's not expensive to get certified.

Manufacturers can skimp on materials in the cable. So lower rated cable cost less to make compared to higher ones. Adding more materials to handle higher wattage will cost more to make hence the higher price.

Thank you. It looks like there are a disturbing amount of reviews saying this fails after a month. I'm going to skip this one - the price is neat, what a shame.

There's a good reason for that though. PD cables are focusing on charge speed, not data. Wire thickness must increase for either aspect. A 100W PD capable, with USB 3+ speeds, cable would be incredibly hefty and a chore to carry around. Either that, or really short. Or both. We can see similar restrictions go with Thunderbolt 3/4 certified/compatible cables. Notice how short they are (at least before max speeds drop), as well as the fairly usual heftiness to them.

Don't get me wrong, I would love the best of both (or more? lol) worlds. But it actually makes a lot of sense why it's not the case. I don't see a better wire material than copper coming around any time soon, nor any better implementations of the current specs than we have now or soon.

This one (linked below) does both 100w and transfers at USB 3.1 speeds. Less known brand tho, not Anker.

How do I tell what wattage my cables are that I have? For example I have a 6ft apple branded usb-c to lightening cable. I also have an Apple brand usb-c to usb-c for my MacBook Air which I use the MacBook block that says 30w. It's a 2020 MacBook Air (the one right before the M processor came out). How do I know what the max capable wattage it can charge on so that I don't waste money buying 100w cables, power cables etc.?

Even as a photographer that'll dump 20GB at a time, the ~35MByte per second typical from my USB2 card reader is still good enough for me.
