Any advice: 11 year old daughter wants a cricut machine - mostly to cut vinyl. Is this an okay to start out with? Are the more upgrades ones worth it?

Price wise, yes. Practically no....suggest wait for BF Deal for better brand one.

The Brother scan and cut for $224 from Sam's club is pretty cool, much larger and has a built in scanner, so you can take a photo or whatever, run it through the machine and then choose where to cut or draw in the software. Makes cutting out silhouettes of people or objects from photos pretty easy.

My Cricut Explore 2 is fine. You can cut bigger for totes, shirts, and etc. Can do cards on it.Depends on what they want to do.

This can only cut as large as 6 inches. If that seems like that would be enough then this is a good option. IMO you don't need anything like the fancier machines if you are just cutting basic vinyl and small things. I did see a good deal on the Explore machine that might work a bit better for a tiny bit more.

Cricut stuff has dropped so much in price after their big controversy huh? I'll probably switch to another company too next time I have to buy my next machine.

I have a cricut maker but got a silhouette portrait 4 recently. I much prefer the silhouette. More flexibility because silhouette isn't as proprietary as cricut. Don't need to use a mat for vinyl and cardstock (mats can be very annoying!). The silhouette cameo 3 is larger than the portrait and has more functions, so that's another option.

Wait… cut cardstock without mats? How does that work?

They were going to brick their software (and thus the machines) if you didn't monthly subscribe. They backpedaled after the inevitable backlash. Personally I just use their software as a place to dump my graphics I designed on other software. But you have to use it, propriety to the machine. I put up with this because I really like the hardware (maker).
