It doesn't have a processor, it is an expansion unit for one of their other NAS devices or you can hook it up via USB to a PC

QNAP or PC/Mac/Linux with USB-C only.

FYI, I used this in a server setup. Had 4 2.5" 1TB SSDs in RAID0 and had an incredibly slow experience. Would not recommend for SSDs. 4 3.5" HDDs made more sense for the speeds I was seeing.

That's really disappointing. :\ I mean, the USB-C version should have at LEAST saturated USB-C speeds, at 5Gbps (500-ish Megabytes per second).

If you had a networked qnap with all those ssds, then, yeah, you're bottlenecked at gigabit ~115-ish Megabytes per second. Heck, you can saturate that downhill with wind on a normal rust-spinner byitself.

The synology mini had 4 slots of 2.5"-only sized slots. Its adorable. It's also adorably impractical given that it only had a gigabit LAN on the back. Give us a cute little package like that with 5 or 10gbps, and shutup and take my money.

The TR-004 was designed to be a cheap expansion chassis for qnap, so it only has a SATA 2 controller. They make faster expansion units but they cost more than $175.

Yes you can. Synology will recognize this as a USB device. Others have done it on reddit. Don't listen to the QNAP compatibility recommendations because they can't even support their own crap, and they're probably not interested in supporting competitors. You may be restricted to hardware RAID unless you go full JBOD, however if your Synology will detect a USB drive of any sort, it'll connect with this.
