Btw, I saw 4TB ones for 68.99 in B&H and thought maybe I over paid for these in Newegg. I compared the two and turns out model are different. B&H one is WD40EFRX with 64MB Cache and Newegg one is WD40EFZX with 128MB Cache. I paid $76.99 with $8 coupon. Don't know about you, but $8 more for 64MB cache sounds not so bad at all.

Just read this and canceled my order. I've a red pro and wanted to get these for mix but seems that's too much downgrade.

Great deal! I had just ordered Ironwolf, now cancelled and ordered 2x8TB. Thanks OP.
Good call... I have 4x8TB Ironwolf's and they are loud and run hot. My QNAP is clicking non-stop with rTorrent Pro running 24x7. It's horrible. My old 2TB WD Red's were fantastic.

Am I better off buying an external drive like the easystore?

Like the idea of a NAS, but honestly hardly copy files over the network. I just need a bigger drive to backup more important files.

My 8tb is nearly full. I do have a spare enclosure from the 8tb I chucked. Could buy this instead?

If all you do is backup the occasional files, photos, etc. then you'll be fine with a couple of external drives. Get a larger drive and consolidate the smaller drives. Don't forget to duplicate the drives for redundancy. All hdd eventually die.

I use my nas to host files over my home network.

I'm hosting nearly 16tb and my family use it daily

Yes. It's the SMR drives you want to avoid.
not really. love the seagate SMR 8TB usb drives i got many years ago. all 3 have been running strong for half a decade at least. clearly i did not buy SMR drives for performance, but the read and write speeds on these have been awesome. they are used mostly for archiving and are read only mostly.
