Squier makes some decent guitars nowadays, especially if you're looking for a beginner or a guitar to modify. Just keep in mind an additional set-up may be necessary for these (50-100 bucks depending on what's needed).
CV's are great; but I recommend the $79 Monoprice deals. Or ebay. Classic Strat styles. Flatter fret board radius like a LP; but preferred 25.5" strat scale length sound and tension.
You'll need to properly sand frets either way. If you want it perfect. Maby add a $10 TUSQ nut.
You can OPTIONALLY lock down an otherwise floating trem like these, for tuning stability; but your can't undo a hard tail without remaking the guitar.
I'm surprised that the Squier is getting so little love here on SD compare to that Fender Player.. Don't SD folks like a good value? The Fender Player series is nice but not such good value. The Squier CV is nice and a good value.
